Improve the pattern base leg turn
Bank angle in the pattern is conventionally kept to 20 to 30 degrees, and the base-to-final turn is where that convention earns its keep. Stall speed rises with bank because the wing must produce more lift in a turn. Roughly 7 per cent higher at 30 degrees, about 19 per cent at 45, and around 40 per cent at 60. At 65 kt on base you don't have much margin to spend steepening a turn to salvage an overshoot.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 685 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 685 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 158 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 30 at EGHJ Bembridge Airport, where the PA28 Warrior II aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 242 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 71 knots. At the time of takeoff, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots.
After taking off, the aircraft entered a right-hand pattern from runway 30, completing the entry in less than 1 nautical mile in 91 seconds. The right-hand pattern crosswind leg was slightly longer, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles in 57 seconds. The pilot then initiated a pattern downwind turn, which covered a distance of 4 nautical miles at an angle of 61.0 degrees to the runway. The downwind leg itself was short, lasting less than 1 nautical mile in 9 seconds.
The pilot then turned onto the base leg, which covered a distance of 3 nautical miles at an angle of 109.6 degrees to the runway. The base leg itself was also short, lasting less than 1 nautical mile in 28 seconds. The final turn was initiated, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles in 114 seconds. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 30 from the south-east, heading 297.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 299 feet above ground level.
The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 44 knots and a distance of 154 meters. The touchdown speed was good, and the touchdown rate was perfect at -48 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was also very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at takeoff, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total flight distance was 8 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 7 minutes. The aircraft used 3 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was characterized by good weather conditions, precise navigation, and a successful landing.
The PA28 Warrior II aircraft successfully landed at EGHJ Bembridge Airport, achieving a score of 99.4%. The final approach was conducted from the south east, heading 297.0° at 1 nautical mile and 299 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated excellent control and precision during the approach, ultimately landing safely on runway 30.
The runway at EGHJ Bembridge Airport has a length of 685 meters, providing a suitable surface for the PA28 Warrior II to touch down. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 54 knots, which may be a minor area for improvement.
The touchdown distance of 154 meters was considered good, demonstrating the aircraft's ability to slow down effectively during the landing. The touchdown speed of 44 knots was also within acceptable limits, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the final stages of the approach. The touchdown rate of -48 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was able to touch down smoothly and without any significant impact.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway as it touched down. This is an important aspect of safe landing, as it helps to prevent the aircraft from veering off the runway or experiencing uneven wear on the landing gear.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from 269°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots. These conditions were favorable for the landing, allowing the aircraft to maintain control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown.
