Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,048 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,048 m of the 2,794 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,218 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 09 at EGGD Bristol Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,476 meters, which accounted for 78% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees. There was a slight tailwind of 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Winford in North Somerset, England. The climb took 26 minutes and covered a distance of 148 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,583 feet above sea level to 36,772 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,188 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile west of Le Tilleul in Normandie, France. This phase lasted for 67 minutes and covered a distance of 509 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile east of LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport in Barcelona, Spain. The descent took 27 minutes and covered a distance of 146 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 36,999 feet above sea level to 1,309 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,690 feet.
The final approach to runway 24 at LEIB Ibiza Airport was made from the north-east, with a heading of 242.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 24, which had a length of 2,794 meters. The threshold height was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 157 knots.
The touchdown point was 804 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 124 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -580 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees, with a slight headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,970 meters, which accounted for 70% of the runway. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 73.9 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 812 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 130 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,612 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LEIB Ibiza Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 242.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 24, which has a length of 2,794 meters.
The threshold height at 59 feet agl was slightly above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. Similarly, the threshold speed of 157 knots was also slightly above the target, suggesting that the aircraft was slightly faster than desired when reaching the runway threshold. However, the touchdown speed of 124 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a good control of the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown point was located 804 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing point. The touchdown rate of -580 feet per minute (fpm) was very hard, indicating a high rate of descent at the moment of touchdown. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots. These conditions were relatively favorable for landing.
The total landing distance of 1,970 meters was 70% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 73.9 meters from the centerline, indicating that the aircraft deviated significantly from the ideal path after touchdown. This misalignment could be attributed to the hard touchdown rate and the subsequent loss of control during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but with some notable deviations from the ideal parameters. The aircraft's high touchdown rate and subsequent misalignment during the rollout phase are areas that require attention to improve the overall landing performance.
