Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,594 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,147 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 09 at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,895 feet, which accounted for 29% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 144 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. There was no crosswind, but a tailwind of 2 knots was present. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead Sugar Grove, Illinois. The climb took 9 minutes and covered 32 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,665 feet above sea level to 24,994 feet above sea level, a total increase of 23,330 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 1 mile south of 75IS Reinke Airport in Rochelle, Illinois. This cruise phase lasted for 29 minutes and covered 201 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 3 miles northwest of Indianola, Iowa. The descent took 9 minutes and covered 51 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 25,005 feet above sea level to 10,344 feet above sea level, a total decrease of 14,661 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started 3 miles south of Massena, Iowa. This cruise phase lasted for only 3 minutes and covered 16 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 2 miles east of Elliott, Iowa. The descent took 10 minutes and covered 33 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 9,424 feet above sea level to 2,311 feet above sea level, a total decrease of 7,113 feet.
The final approach to runway 30 at KOFF Offutt Air Force Base was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 309.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,269 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 30, which had a length of 9,594 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 105 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 1,148 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 93 knots. The touchdown rate was good at -188 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 269°. There was a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 2,177 feet, which accounted for 23% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took only 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 340 nautical miles, and the flight took 70 minutes. Notably, the aircraft used 0 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KOFF Offutt Air Force Base, achieving a score of 99.1%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southeast, heading 309.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,269 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the runway's length of 9,594 feet and its orientation.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed of 105 knots. This indicates that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and speed. The touchdown distance of 1,148 feet was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's energy and touch down smoothly.
However, the touchdown speed of 93 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly longer rollout. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -188 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control over the aircraft's descent and avoided any excessive deceleration.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 61°F and a gentle wind of 2 knots from 269°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 2 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and make the landing more manageable.
The total landing distance of 2,177 feet was only 23% of the runway's length, indicating that the pilot had executed a precise and controlled approach. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control over the aircraft's direction and speed during the rollout phase.
Overall, the Cessna CJ4 Citation's landing at KOFF Offutt Air Force Base was a success, with the pilot executing a precise and controlled approach that resulted in a smooth touchdown and a short rollout. The aircraft's performance was impressive, and the pilot's skills were evident throughout the landing.
