Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,871 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 313 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Bonanza G36, then departed from runway 09R at KMLB Melbourne Orlando International Airport. The takeoff distance was 651 meters, which accounted for 23% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 89 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and winds of 3 knots at 201 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the tailwind was 1 knot. After departing from KMLB, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting overhead the airport and climbing from 561 feet above sea level to 10,327 feet above sea level, an increase of 9,766 feet in 16 minutes and covering 28 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles north of KTIX Space Coast Regional Airport, lasting 5 minutes and covering 13 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time starting 2 miles west of 3FD6 Tradewinds Aerodrome, climbing from 11,122 feet above sea level to 11,988 feet above sea level, an increase of 866 feet in 2 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise continued, starting 1 mile southwest of 34FD Blue Ridge Flightpark Airport, lasting 13 minutes and covering 33 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 3 miles west of Ormond-by-the-Sea, descending from 11,709 feet above sea level to 3,017 feet above sea level, a decrease of 8,692 feet in 7 minutes and covering 18 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed, starting 5 miles northeast of Palm Coast, lasting 5 minutes and covering 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 5 miles northeast of Butler Beach, descending from 2,990 feet above sea level to 1,289 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,701 feet in 4 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 31 at KSGJ Northeast Florida Regional Airport was made from the southeast, heading 308.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,272 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 31 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 312 meters, which was 36% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 69 knots, and the touchdown rate was perfect at -50 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and winds of 2 knots at 284 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 2 knots. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 666 meters, and the runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 119 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 59 minutes. The aircraft used 34 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Bonanza G36 aircraft successfully landed at KSGJ Northeast Florida Regional Airport, achieving a high score of 98.4%. The final approach was conducted from the southeast, heading 308.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach to the runway was precise, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 78 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown distance of 312 meters and a touchdown speed of 69 knots. The touchdown rate was particularly impressive, with a perfect rate of -50 feet per minute (fpm). However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft landing 4 meters off-centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 14°C and a gentle wind of 2 knots from 284°. This resulted in a minimal crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance of 666 meters was relatively short, accounting for only 36% of the runway length.
The rollout alignment after touchdown was excellent, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control of the aircraft. Overall, the landing was a success, with the Bonanza G36 aircraft performing well in a variety of conditions. The high score achieved by the pilot is a testament to their expertise and ability to handle the aircraft with precision and control.
