Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,919 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,919 m of the 2,997 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,064 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Milan Malpensa International Airport, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles in 12 minutes. The departure roll took place on runway 35R, with a takeoff distance of 1,715 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 170 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 14°C temperature and winds of 5 knots at 204 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the tailwind was 4 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile southwest of Casorate Sempione, Italy, and reached an altitude of 35,661 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,821 feet from the initial altitude of 1,840 feet. This climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 97 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles south of San Bartolomeo, Italy, and lasted for 63 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 423 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 2 miles north of Montalban, Spain, and saw the aircraft descend from 35,715 feet to 4,733 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,982 feet in 18 minutes and covering 92 nautical miles.
The aircraft then underwent a series of enroute climbs and descents, including a climb from 4,716 feet to 7,593 feet above sea level in 3 minutes and covering 11 nautical miles, and a descent from 7,404 feet to 5,353 feet above sea level in 3 minutes and covering 14 nautical miles. The aircraft also entered a level cruise phase for 6 minutes, covering 15 nautical miles, before descending from 5,314 feet to 3,207 feet above sea level in 2 minutes and covering 8 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 18L at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport took place from the north, with the aircraft heading 180.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,243 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 18L, which had a length of 2,997 meters, saw the aircraft touch down 642 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 123 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -148 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 10°C temperature and winds of 4 knots at 250 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 1,832 meters, which accounted for 61% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 11 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The total flight distance was 670 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 141 minutes. The aircraft used a total of -2,460 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 aircraft successfully landed at LEMD Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, with a final approach score of 87.2%. The aircraft was approaching runway 18L from the north, heading 180.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,243 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed with a threshold height of 65 feet agl, which was above the target height. However, the threshold speed of 142 knots was well above the target, indicating a slightly aggressive approach. Despite this, the touchdown point was 642 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively safe distance.
The touchdown speed of 123 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -148 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were mild, with a temperature of 10°C and a light wind of 4 knots at 250°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. These conditions were favorable for a safe landing.
The total landing distance of 1,832 meters was 61% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with a good touchdown speed and a smooth touchdown rate. However, the slightly aggressive approach and the touchdown point being beyond the touchdown zone are areas for improvement.
