Keep the approach speed on target
See Arrival Landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,940 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 484 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight departed from Dublin Airport, where the aircraft taxied from the parking area to the runway, taking 13 minutes and covering 3 nautical miles. Departing from runway 10R, the Boeing 737-800 accelerated down the 1,558-meter runway, using 60% of its length, and lifted off at a speed of 157 knots. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a gentle tailwind of 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute altitude, it began its ascent 1 mile northeast of Ballymun, Ireland, and continued to climb to 32,995 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,676 feet in 19 minutes, covering 124 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase started 1 mile northwest of Frodsham, England, and lasted 22 minutes, covering 159 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 32,999 feet to 25,055 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,944 feet in 8 minutes, covering 63 nautical miles. The flight continued with multiple enroute level cruise and descent phases, navigating through various locations in England and Belgium, before commencing its final approach to runway 01 at Brussels Airport.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down on runway 01 at Brussels Airport, using 50% of the 2,722-meter runway, with a touchdown speed of 119 knots and a firm touchdown rate of -316 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 1,354 meters, and the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 7 minutes and covering 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 526 nautical miles, taking 94 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,687 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down on runway 01 at EBBR Brussels Airport with a firm touchdown rate of -316 fpm, indicating a controlled descent. The aircraft's speed at touchdown was 119 kt, which was within acceptable limits. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target of 130 kt, registering 129 kt. The approach quality was good, with a threshold height that met expectations.
The touchdown point was located 67 m beyond the touchdown zone, which was slightly beyond the ideal position. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 3.7 m from the centreline, although the rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft's performance was further highlighted by a total landing distance of 1,354 m, which accounted for 50% of the runway length. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a light wind of 2 kt at 270 °, contributed to a stable and predictable approach.
Overall, the landing performance of the Boeing 737-800 was satisfactory, with a score of 98.0%. The approach and touchdown characteristics were good, although there was room for improvement in terms of threshold speed and touchdown zone alignment. The rollout alignment was excellent, and the aircraft's performance was consistent with the expected standards for a commercial airliner.
