Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,578 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 469 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Kodiak 100, then departed from runway 09 at KIWD Gogebic Iron County Airport. The takeoff distance was 244 meters, which accounted for 12% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 74 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots at 0 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile east of KIWD Gogebic Iron County Airport. The climb started at an altitude of 2,212 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 9,800 feet above sea level, an increase of 7,587 feet in just 6 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 19 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 5 miles southwest of White Pine, Michigan. This phase lasted for 9 minutes and covered a distance of 31 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 12 miles northeast of Ontonagon, Michigan. The descent started at an altitude of 9,521 feet above sea level and ended at an altitude of 2,469 feet above sea level, a decrease of 7,052 feet in 7 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 21 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07 at KCMX Houghton County Memorial Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 70.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,398 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 07, which had a length of 1,578 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed at 80 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 468 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 67 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent at -97 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 9 knots at 60 degrees.
Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 77 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 31 minutes. The aircraft used 73 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft in question, a Kodiak 100, successfully landed at KCMX Houghton County Memorial Airport, achieving a score of 94.6%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 70.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,398 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 07, which has a length of 1,578 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed of 80 kt, suggesting that the pilot may have been a bit aggressive in their approach.
The touchdown distance of 468 meters was considered good, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft during the landing. However, the touchdown speed of 67 kt was a little fast, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to reduce the touchdown speed. The touchdown rate of -97 fpm was excellent, indicating that the pilot had good control over the aircraft's descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 9 kt from a direction of 60°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 kt and a headwind of 9 kt, which the pilot effectively managed during the landing. The total landing distance of 767 meters was 49% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft during the landing.
The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had good control over the aircraft's direction during the landing. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control over the aircraft during the approach, landing, and rollout phases.
