Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,978 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 201 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A350-900, then departed from runway 26L at EDDM Munich Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,777 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 159 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 4°C, with a wind speed of 5 knots at 140°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the tailwind was 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Hallbergmoos in Bavaria, Germany. The climb took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 200 nautical miles, with an increase in altitude of 35,203 feet.
The enroute level cruise started overhead Urbar in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, and lasted for 30 minutes, covering a distance of 885 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from a latitude of 56.9924707 and longitude of -14.9534121, to an altitude of 36,762 feet. This climb took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 52 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise then started at a latitude of 57.3423409 and longitude of -16.5739499, and lasted for 42 minutes, covering a distance of 1,317 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from a location 86 miles northeast of CCZ2 Rigolet Airport in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, to an altitude of 37,188 feet. This climb took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 51 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise then started 30 miles northeast of CCZ2 Rigolet Airport and lasted for 31 minutes, covering a distance of 866 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 5 miles south of Bethel in Vermont, United States. The descent took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 152 nautical miles, with a decrease in altitude of 31,801 feet.
The enroute level cruise then started 2 miles north of Scotchtown in New York, United States, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another descent, this time from 2 miles north of Warwick in New York, United States, to an altitude of 574 feet. This descent took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 37 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 29 at KEWR Newark Liberty International Airport was from the east, with a heading of 278.0° at 2 nautical miles and 551 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 29 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 202 meters and a touchdown speed of 138 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -324 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.3 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of -2°C, with a wind speed of 14 knots at 310°. The crosswind was 8 knots, and the headwind was 11 knots. The total landing distance was 1,189 meters, which is 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 3,581 nautical miles, and the flight took 165 minutes. The aircraft used 47,920 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A350-900 successfully landed at Newark Liberty International Airport (KEWR) on runway 29, achieving a score of 96.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 278.0° at 2 nautical miles and 551 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed with good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing.
However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 137 kt, which may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to maintain a higher speed for a smoother touchdown. The touchdown distance of 202 meters was within acceptable limits, but the touchdown speed of 138 kt was slightly faster than desired. This may have resulted in a firmer touchdown rate of -324 feet per minute (fpm), which could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the crosswind or the pilot's judgment during the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -2°C and a wind speed of 14 kt from 310°. The crosswind component was 8 kt, while the headwind component was 11 kt, which may have affected the aircraft's approach and landing.
The total landing distance of 1,189 meters was 60% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the landing and rollout phases. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the desired parameters that may be addressed in future training or operations.
