Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed and off the runway's 3° glideslope.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,661 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,661 m of the 3,885 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 768 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 8 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 11 at NFTF Fua'amotu International Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,526 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 165 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots at a direction of 49 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 11 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south east of NFTF Fua'amotu International Airport, and climbed from an altitude of 1,301 feet above sea level to 36,984 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,683 feet, in 29 minutes and covering 144 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase began 92 miles south east of NFOL Ono-i-Lau Airport and lasted for 317 minutes, covering a distance of 1,705 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, beginning 73 miles east of FC03 Sydney Static Carrier - CVN78, and descended from 36,522 feet above sea level to 1,811 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,711 feet, in 20 minutes and covering 94 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 34L at YSSY Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport was made from the south, heading 349.0 degrees at 3 nautical miles and 1,750 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 34L, which had a length of 3,885 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was well above the target at 138 knots. The touchdown point was 354 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 132 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -210 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.3 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.2 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots at a direction of 328 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 6 knots. The total landing distance was 1,581 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway.
The total flight distance was 1,951 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 377 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 4,442 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The A400M aircraft has successfully landed at YSSY Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach to runway 34L was initiated from the south, heading 349.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,750 feet above ground level. The aircraft's touchdown speed was slightly above the target, reaching 138 knots, which is a good indication of the pilot's control over the aircraft's descent.
However, the touchdown point was 354 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight overcorrection or a delay in the pilot's decision to touch down. The touchdown speed of 132 knots was also a bit fast, which could have contributed to the extended landing distance. The touchdown rate of -210 feet per minute was fair, but could be improved upon.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment or a minor issue with the aircraft's navigation system. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and a gentle headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,581 meters was 41% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.2 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a minor issue with the pilot's control or a slight deviation in the aircraft's trajectory.
Overall, the A400M aircraft's landing at YSSY Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport was successful, but with some areas for improvement. The pilot's control over the aircraft's descent and touchdown speed was good, but the touchdown point and speed were slightly off-target. The runway touchdown position and rollout alignment were also slightly misaligned, which may require further attention and training.
