Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,337 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,337 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 58 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft flown was an AT802 Firefighting, which embarked on a flight from the parking area to the runway at Riviera Villanova d'Albenga International Airport (LIMG). The taxiing process took 2 minutes and covered a short distance of less than 1 nm, setting the stage for the impending takeoff.
With the departure roll on runway 09 underway, the aircraft lifted off with a speed of 93 kt, leaving just 44% of the runway's 588-meter length behind. The initial takeoff performance was notable for its efficiency, taking advantage of the favorable local weather conditions, including a temperature of 16 °C, wind speeds of 4 kt at 19 °, and a moderate headwind of 1 kt.
Once airborne, the AT802 began its enroute climb from 335 ft above sea level (asl) to 3,863 ft asl, a vertical gain of 3,528 ft over a 4-minute period. This ascent covered a horizontal distance of 8 nm as the aircraft soared over the Italian landscape. Specifically, it was climbing from above Villanova d'Albenga to establish itself at the higher elevation.
After leveling off, the aircraft embarked on a brief 2-minute cruise phase at 4 nm, reaching a milestone point above Pietra Ligure. The flight's trajectory then shifted with a controlled descent, losing 1,000 ft in just 2 minutes and covering 3 nm as the aircraft descended from 3,564 ft asl to 2,565 ft asl above Calice Ligure.
There followed another level cruise phase, now 1 mile west of Segno, which lasted for 2 minutes and added another 1 nm to the flight's total distance. A subsequent climb from 2,680 ft asl to 4,665 ft asl above Vezzi Portio involved a 3-minute period and covered an 8 nm horizontal distance.
Just before its final approach, the AT802 embarked on a significant descent from 4,663 ft asl to 496 ft asl, a vertical drop of nearly 4,167 ft, which occurred within a 4-minute timeframe. This final descent phase covered 8 nm as the aircraft aligned for the landing, positioning itself 1 mile south of Giustenice.
The final approach to runway 09 was initiated from the west, heading 92.0 ° at a height of 356 ft asl over the threshold area located 1 nm away. Upon landing on the 1,337 m runway, the aircraft touched down safely, achieving a touchdown speed of 59 kt while covering a short touchdown distance of 55 m.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 °C, a wind speed of 4 kt at 20 °, and moderate crosswinds of 4 kt, supported by a weak headwind of 1 kt. The aircraft's landing distance covered just 17% of the runway length, at 221 m. Moreover, the touchdown rate was fair, at -206 fpm.
After a successful landing, the aircraft underwent a smooth taxiing phase back to the parking area, requiring 2 minutes to cover less than 1 nm. Throughout the entire flight, the AT802 Firefighting demonstrated an efficient flight profile, which spanned 34 nm, utilized 56 kg of fuel, and lasted 22 minutes, showcasing its capabilities and performance in handling various phases of flight.
Aircraft AT802 Firefighting has successfully landed at LIMG Riviera Villanova d'Albenga International Airport. The approach path to runway 09 from the west was established at a heading of 92.0° at 1 nautical mile and 356 feet Above Ground Level (AGL). With a 62-kt threshold speed, the aircraft touched down at a distance of 55 meters from the runway threshold, achieving a touchdown speed of 59 kt.
The local weather conditions were favorable for the landing, with a temperature of 15°C and negligible wind conditions. The wind speed was recorded at 4 kt, with a direction of 20°. However, due to the crosswind of 4 kt, the pilots had to consider these factors to maintain control and directional stability during the landing. A headwind of 1 kt further added to the challenge but had a relatively minor impact.
The touchdown performance of the aircraft was notable as the touchdown rate was recorded to be fair at -206 feet per minute (fpm). This indicates that the aircraft descended at a moderate rate, which is generally considered acceptable for a firefighting aircraft, as these planes are designed to take off and land in challenging conditions.
Following touchdown, the aircraft experienced a slightly deviated landing, with a 4.7-meter misalignment from the centreline of the runway. This offset may have resulted from the pilots' compensatory action in response to the crosswind, although further analysis would be required to confirm this assumption.
During the initial rollout phase after touchdown, the aircraft was again slightly misaligned, this time by 9.0 meters from the centreline. This misalignment could be a result of various factors, such as pilot fatigue, equipment malfunction or simply the aircraft handling characteristics.
The landing distance achieved was 221 meters, which accounts for 17% of the available runway length of 1,337 meters. Considering the favorable wind conditions and moderate temperatures, this performance is satisfactory for a firefighting aircraft of this type. Given an overall score of 94.0%, this landing would be classified as successful, demonstrating the operational capability of the AT802 Firefighting aircraft at LIMG Riviera Villanova d'Albenga International Airport under these specific conditions.
