Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,474 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,013 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 05 at KUGN Waukegan National Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,381 feet, which is 40% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 65°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 1 knot. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead Zion, Illinois, and ascended from 1,596 feet above sea level to 5,005 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,409 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead the 04WI Dutch Gap Airstrip in Bristol, Wisconsin, and lasted for 12 minutes, covering a distance of 41 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent from 4,996 feet above sea level to 2,690 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,306 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The descent started overhead the 4LL8 Colonial Acres Airport in Sycamore, Illinois.
The aircraft then entered another enroute level cruise, this time starting 1 mile southeast of the 0IL9 Jack W Watson Airport in DeKalb, Illinois, and lasted for 4 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 09 at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport was made from the west, heading 89.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,263 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 09 at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,005 feet, which is 37% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 100 knots, which is faster than the target speed. The touchdown rate was smooth at -131 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°.
The total landing distance was 2,397 feet, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 77 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 27 minutes. Notably, the aircraft used 0 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport, achieving a score of 99.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 89.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,263 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the runway's length of 6,474 feet and its orientation.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed of 105 knots. This indicates that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and speed. The touchdown distance of 1,005 feet was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's energy and touch down smoothly.
However, the touchdown speed of 100 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, which may indicate that the pilot could have applied more gentle control inputs during the final approach. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -131 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting that the pilot had effectively managed the aircraft's descent and controlled its rate of descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had accurately aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°, were relatively calm, which likely contributed to the smooth landing. The crosswind and tailwind components were minimal, at 0 and 1 knots, respectively, which further reduced the complexity of the landing.
The total landing distance of 2,397 feet was 37% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot had effectively controlled the aircraft's rotation and deceleration during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, resulting in a high score of 99.7%.
