Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,008 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,008 m of the 3,986 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 791 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 23L at Düsseldorf Airport (EDDL), with a takeoff distance of 1,409 meters, which accounted for 59% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 163 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 17°C temperature and a wind speed of 17 knots at 190°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 12 knots. After departing from Düsseldorf, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and reached an altitude of 33,862 feet above sea level. The climb was a significant increase of 32,714 feet in just 23 minutes, covering a distance of 155 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered 28 nautical miles. This cruise phase took place 1 mile south-west of Arpke, Germany. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 1 mile north-west of Ruhen, Germany, and ended at an altitude of 3,081 feet above sea level. This descent phase covered a distance of 103 nautical miles and took 16 minutes.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 5 minutes and covered 16 nautical miles. This cruise phase took place 2 miles west of Altlandsberg, Germany. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 1 mile west of Gruenheide, Germany, and ended at an altitude of 1,394 feet above sea level. This descent phase covered a distance of 6 nautical miles and took just 3 minutes.
The final approach to runway 24L at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (EDDB) was made from the east, with a heading of 249.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,230 feet above ground level. The landing was made on a runway with a length of 3,986 meters. The threshold height was above the target, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 153 knots.
The touchdown point was 372 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 143 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -306 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.9 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 10°C temperature and a wind speed of 9 knots at 300°. The crosswind and headwind components were 7 and 5 knots, respectively.
The total landing distance was 1,925 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.9 meters from the centreline. After landing, the aircraft took 7 minutes to taxi to the parking, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 318 nautical miles, and the flight took 67 minutes, using 3,209 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed on runway 24L at EDDB Berlin Brandenburg Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 249.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,230 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was 372 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight overextension of the landing.
The touchdown speed of 143 knots was slightly above the target speed, which could have contributed to the firm touchdown rate of -306 feet per minute (fpm). The threshold height at 64 feet agl was above the target, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 153 knots. These deviations suggest that the aircraft may have been slightly high and fast during the approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 10°C, with a wind speed of 9 knots from 300°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. These conditions may have affected the aircraft's approach and landing performance.
The total landing distance of 1,925 meters was 48% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.9 meters from the centerline, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal path. Overall, the landing was successful, but with some notable deviations from the ideal parameters.
