Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,948 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 500 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at London Heathrow Airport, EGLL. This process took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 27L, with the aircraft taking off after covering 55% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 1,835 meters, and the liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft climbed into the air, it encountered local weather conditions of 12°C temperature and winds of 2 knots at 155 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the tailwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb started 1 mile south east of Colnbrook, Slough, England, where the aircraft climbed from 1,116 feet above sea level to 5,907 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,791 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile west of Farnham Royal, Buckinghamshire, England, and lasted 5 minutes, covering 21 nautical miles. The aircraft then started another enroute climb 1 mile north east of North Mymms, Hertfordshire, England, where it climbed from 6,001 feet above sea level to 34,442 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,441 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 92 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise continued overhead Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, England, lasting 25 minutes and covering 160 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it started its enroute descent 10 miles east of Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England, descending from 34,391 feet above sea level to 2,853 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,538 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 97 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16 at Aberdeen Dyce Airport, EGPD, was made from the north, heading 158.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,295 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 16, which was 1,948 meters long. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 129 knots. However, the touchdown point was 79 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 126 knots.
The touchdown rate was good at -179 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 8°C temperature and winds of 5 knots at 200 degrees, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,289 meters, which was 66% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area from the runway, taking 3 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 393 nautical miles, taking 82 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,293 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at EGPD Aberdeen Dyce Airport, achieving a score of 98.5%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north, heading 158.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,295 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 16, which has a length of 1,948 meters.
The pilot maintained a good threshold height and speed, touching down at 129 knots. However, the touchdown speed was slightly higher than ideal at 126 knots, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing speed. The touchdown rate was good, with a descent rate of -179 feet per minute (fpm), which is within the acceptable range.
The touchdown point was 79 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centerline, but this did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 5 knots from 200°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions likely contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance was 1,289 meters, which is 66% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and judgment in navigating the aircraft to a safe touchdown.
