Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,170 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,029 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 23 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 35L at the Orlando International Airport (KMCO) in Florida, United States. The takeoff distance was 83 feet, which was 1% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 79°F and winds of 3 knots at 70°. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb started 1 mile northeast of the Orlando International Airport and reached an altitude of 37,034 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,934 feet in 27 minutes and covering a distance of 185 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise, which started 5 miles southeast of Lucaya in the Bahamas and lasted for 85 minutes, covering a distance of 731 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 4 miles east of the Baigua Airport in the Dominican Republic. The descent from 36,893 feet to 4,217 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,676 feet, took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 12 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started 3 miles north of Salvaleon de Higueey in the Dominican Republic and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began another descent, which started 3 miles north of Salvaleon de Higueey. The descent from 4,217 feet to 2,983 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,234 feet, took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started 2 miles north of Otra Banda in the Dominican Republic and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another descent, which started 4 miles northwest of the Magdalena Cuya Airport in the Dominican Republic. The descent from 2,960 feet to 1,949 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,011 feet, took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started 5 miles west of Salvaleon de Higueey and lasted for 6 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another descent, which started 7 miles southwest of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. The descent from 2,055 feet to 1,323 feet above sea level, a decrease of 731 feet, took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08 at the Punta Cana International Airport (MDPC) was made from the west, heading 74.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,271 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 08 was successful, with a touchdown point 641 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 127 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was fair at -264 feet per minute.
The total landing distance was 4,342 feet, which was 43% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 38 feet from the centreline. The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 8 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 982 nautical miles, and the flight took 163 minutes. The aircraft used 13,130 pounds of fuel
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at MDPC Punta Cana International Airport, achieving a score of 92.4%. The final approach to runway 08 was initiated from the west, with a heading of 74.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,271 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 142 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 641 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 127 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -264 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a slightly steeper descent than ideal. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 24 feet from the centreline, which may have contributed to the slightly higher touchdown rate.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 79°F and a gentle wind of 3 knots at 70°. The crosswind component was negligible, and the aircraft experienced a headwind of 3 knots, which likely assisted with the landing. The total landing distance was 4,342 feet, accounting for 43% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled throughout the approach and landing phases.
During the rollout phase, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 38 feet from the centreline, which may have been a result of the initial touchdown position being off-centre. Despite this, the aircraft was able to maintain control and come to a stop safely. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good handling characteristics.
