Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,524 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 582 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 23 at LTBA İstanbul Atatürk Airport. The Cessna Skyhawk took off with a takeoff distance of 1,705 meters, which is 70% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 52 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 270 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots.
After taking off, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started overhead LTBA İstanbul Atatürk Airport Bakırköy. This phase of the flight lasted for 12 minutes and covered a distance of 8 nautical miles. Following the cruise, the aircraft began its descent, which started 1 mile west of UEskuedar. The descent was from an altitude of 982 feet above sea level to 93 feet above sea level, a decrease of 889 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began a climb, which started 2 miles northeast of UEskuedar. The climb was from an altitude of 93 feet above sea level to 741 feet above sea level, an increase of 648 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The climb was followed by another descent, which started 4 miles northeast of Sisli. The descent was from an altitude of 742 feet above sea level to 8 feet above sea level, a decrease of 734 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached the landing site, it encountered a go-around 12 miles northeast of Sisli at an altitude of 6 feet above ground level. The aircraft then began its final descent, which was from an altitude of 8 feet above ground level to 0 feet above ground level. This descent took 10 seconds and resulted in a smooth touchdown speed of 48 knots and a touchdown rate of -113 feet per minute. The touchdown point was 211 meters beyond the touchdown zone.
Following the touchdown, the aircraft began its landing rollout, which covered a distance of 49 meters. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 2 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 24 nautical miles, and the flight lasted for 19 minutes. The aircraft used 14 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna Skyhawk successfully landed 12 miles northeast of Sisli in Istanbul, Turkey, with a score of 73.8%. The aircraft began its descent from 8 feet above ground level (agl) to 0 ft agl, demonstrating a controlled and gradual approach to the landing site. The descent rate was calculated to be -113 feet per minute (fpm), which is considered smooth and within the acceptable range for a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft maintained a speed of 48 knots, which is a good indication of a controlled and stable landing. The touchdown point was located 211 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, suggesting that the pilot may have slightly overestimated the landing distance or encountered some unexpected wind conditions.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots, which may have affected the aircraft's landing performance. However, the pilot successfully managed the aircraft's speed and direction to achieve a smooth touchdown.
Following the touchdown, the aircraft underwent a landing rollout, during which it maintained an altitude of 0 feet above sea level (asl) and covered a distance of 49 meters. This indicates that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently, minimizing the risk of any potential hazards or obstacles on the runway.
Overall, while the landing score of 73.8% suggests that there may be some room for improvement, the pilot demonstrated a good understanding of aircraft control and landing techniques, and successfully navigated the aircraft to a safe and controlled touchdown.
