Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,703 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,703 m of the 2,910 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 597 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Zürich Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes to cover a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 28, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 163 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 8°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 250°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb from an altitude of 2,762 feet above sea level to 33,985 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,223 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 136 nautical miles. The enroute climb started overhead Rumlang, a location in the Kanton Zurich region of Switzerland. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 62 minutes and covered a distance of 388 nautical miles. This phase began approximately 1 mile east of Eloise, a location in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent from an altitude of 34,033 feet above sea level to 1,456 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,577 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 98 nautical miles. The descent started 15 miles east of Deltebre Airport, a location in the Catalunya region of Spain. The final approach to runway 30 at Valencia Airport was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 296.0° at an altitude of 1,237 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing took place on runway 30 at Valencia Airport, which had a length of 2,910 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 148 knots. The touchdown point was 179 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 135 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -137 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21°C, with a wind speed of 15 knots from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots.
Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 6 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 631 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 2 hours and 0 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,524 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at LEVC Valencia Airport, achieving a score of 92.6%. The final approach to runway 30 was initiated from the south east, with a heading of 296.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,237 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 2,910 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 148 knots. The touchdown point was located 179 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 135 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -137 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled descent.
However, there were some minor issues with the alignment of the aircraft during the landing. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.9 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by the same amount. This suggests that the pilot may have had some difficulty maintaining a straight course during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 15 knots from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots. These conditions would have required the pilot to make some adjustments to the aircraft's approach and landing, but they do not appear to have had a significant impact on the outcome.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor issues with alignment that need to be addressed. The pilot's score of 92.6% indicates a high level of proficiency, but there is still room for improvement.
