Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,390 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,390 m of the 2,835 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,155 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Zürich Airport (LSZH), the Airbus A321 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. As the aircraft reached the end of runway 32, it initiated its departure roll, accelerating down the 2,284-meter-long runway, which represented 69% of its total length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 167 knots, clearing the ground with ease.
As the aircraft climbed out of Zürich, it encountered a relatively calm atmosphere, with a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 1 knot from a direction of 170 degrees. The enroute climb phase began overhead Niederglatt / Grafschaft, where the aircraft started its ascent from an altitude of 2,385 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 29,008 feet. This climb phase covered a distance of 113 nautical miles and took approximately 17 minutes, resulting in an impressive increase of 26,623 feet in altitude. The aircraft then entered a 12-minute level cruise phase, flying at an altitude of 29,008 feet, as it traversed 101 nautical miles of German airspace.
As the aircraft began its descent phase, it started its descent from 28,939 feet above sea level to an altitude of 1,934 feet, a decrease of 27,005 feet in just 16 minutes, covering a distance of 95 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 04 at Dresden Airport (EDDC) was initiated from the southwest, with the aircraft flying at an altitude of 1,187 feet above ground level and a heading of 41.0 degrees. The aircraft landed on the 2,836-meter-long runway, with a total landing distance of 2,313 meters, representing 82% of the runway length. The touchdown point was 742 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the aircraft's touchdown speed of 128 knots was within acceptable limits, while the touchdown rate of -202 feet per minute was fair. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 318 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 2,902 kilograms of fuel during the journey, which took a total of 57 minutes.
The final approach to runway 04 at EDDC Dresden Airport from the south west was initiated at 4 nm and 1,187 ft above ground level, with a heading of 41.0°. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 68 ft above ground level, which was above the target. The threshold speed of 142 kt was slightly above the target, indicating a slight delay in the touchdown process.
The aircraft touched down 742 m beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 128 kt, which was good. However, the touchdown rate of -202 fpm was fair, indicating a slightly higher than ideal rate of descent. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.2 m from the centreline, which may have contributed to the slightly higher touchdown rate. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind of 3 kt at 250°, were relatively calm, with a crosswind of 1 kt and a tailwind of 3 kt.
The total landing distance of 2,313 m was 82% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 15.0 m from the centreline, which may have been a result of the initial touchdown position. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 78.1%.
