Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 4,585 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 4,585 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 616 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 29 at NTTB Bora Bora Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,328 feet, which accounted for 27% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 60 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 1 knot at 8°. There was no crosswind or headwind. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile northwest of NTTB Bora Bora Airport, near Motu Mute in the Iles Sous-le-Vent, French Polynesia. The climb was from an altitude of 1,014 feet above sea level to 4,480 feet, an increase of 3,466 feet, in 5 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 3 miles southwest of Vaitape in the Iles Sous-le-Vent, French Polynesia. This phase lasted for 6 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 9 miles south of Vaitape. The descent was from an altitude of 5,003 feet above sea level to 1,308 feet, a decrease of 3,695 feet, in 8 minutes and covering a distance of 10 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07 at NTTR Raiatea Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 84.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,294 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 07, which had a length of 4,585 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 60 knots. The touchdown distance was 609 feet, and the touchdown speed was 52 knots, both of which were considered good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -124 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 6°. There was no crosswind or headwind. The total landing distance was 1,531 feet, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The total flight distance was 32 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 29 minutes. The aircraft used 24 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at NTTR Raiatea Airport, achieving a high score of 98.2%. The final approach to runway 07 was conducted from the west, with a heading of 84.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,294 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good control and precision throughout the approach.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 60 knots, which was slightly below the target threshold speed. However, this did not affect the overall performance of the landing, as the touchdown distance of 609 feet was considered good. The touchdown speed of 52 knots was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -124 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft aligning itself precisely with the centerline of the runway. This is a critical aspect of landing, as it ensures the aircraft remains stable and on course. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 6°.
The total landing distance of 1,531 feet was 33% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This indicates that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently, without compromising safety. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, with the aircraft remaining aligned with the centerline of the runway throughout the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft demonstrating good control, precision, and stability throughout the approach and touchdown phases. The high score of 98.2% reflects the pilot's skill and expertise in navigating the aircraft safely and efficiently.
