See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: no landing flap set and off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,984 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 777 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 18 at EDFB Reichelsheim Airfield, a small airfield in Germany. The aircraft, a Piper PA-24-250 Comanche, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 74 kt, covering a distance of 320 m, which was 26% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 3 °C and a gentle headwind of 3 kt.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the town of Florstadt in Hessen, Germany. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 931 ft asl to 2,454 ft asl, an increase of 1,523 ft in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nm. This rapid climb was followed by an 8-minute level cruise, which started 1 mile west of Altenstadt, covering a distance of 17 nm.
The enroute descent began 1 mile west of Neu-Isenburg, where the aircraft descended from an altitude of 1,647 ft asl to 921 ft asl, a decrease of 726 ft in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nm. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, this time starting overhead EDDF Frankfurt Airport, where it remained for 6 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nm.
The final approach to runway 25L at EDDF Frankfurt Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 229.0 ° at 1 nm and 563 ft agl. The landing was made on a runway with a length of 3,984 m, and the threshold height was excessively over target, while the threshold speed was too high at 88 kt. The touchdown point was 263 m beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 56 kt was good, and the touchdown rate of -237 fpm was fair.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 m from the centreline, but the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The total landing distance was 1,157 m, which was 29% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2 °C and a gentle tailwind of 1 kt. The total flight distance was 28 nm, and the flight used 12 kg of fuel, taking a total of 20 minutes to complete.
The Piper PA-24-250 Comanche aircraft successfully landed on runway 25L at Frankfurt Airport (EDDF), but with some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 229.0° at 1 nautical mile and 563 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was 263 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The threshold height at 126 feet agl was excessively over the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been too high during the approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was too high at 88 knots, which could have contributed to the deviation from the touchdown zone. However, the touchdown speed of 56 knots was good, indicating that the pilot managed to slow down the aircraft effectively.
The touchdown rate of -237 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to improve the rate of descent during the approach. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.3 meters from the centerline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or during the landing roll.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 13°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 1 knot, indicating minimal wind effects on the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,157 meters was 29% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the runway length of 3,984 meters. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot managed to maintain control of the aircraft during the landing roll and align it with the centerline.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of threshold height, threshold speed, and touchdown rate. With some adjustments to the approach and landing technique, the pilot may be able to achieve a more precise and efficient landing.
