Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
Side view — the last 1,216 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,216 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 540 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 08 at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport (CYTZ). The takeoff distance was 505 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 60 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270 degrees. This resulted in a negligible crosswind and a slight tailwind of 1 knot. The aircraft then entered a left-hand pattern, which involved a turn from the runway 08 at CYTZ. The distance covered during this turn was less than 1 nautical mile and took approximately 100 seconds.
As the aircraft continued in the left-hand pattern, it encountered a crosswind from runway 08 at CYTZ. The distance covered during this turn was less than 1 nautical mile and took only 20 seconds. The aircraft then proceeded to the downwind leg, where it turned at an angle of 89.6 degrees to the runway. The distance covered during this turn was 1 nautical mile. The downwind leg itself was 3 nautical miles long and took approximately 105 seconds to complete.
The aircraft then turned onto the base leg, which involved a turn at an angle of 17.2 degrees to the runway. The distance covered during this turn was 1 nautical mile. The final approach to the runway 08 at CYTZ was made from the southwest, with a heading of 73.0 degrees at an altitude of 0 nautical miles and 191 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 08 at CYTZ was successful, with the touchdown point being 75 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 48 knots, which was good, while the touchdown rate was fair at -202 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as those at takeoff.
The total landing distance was 690 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 6 nautical miles, which was covered in 12 minutes, and the aircraft used 4 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at CYTZ Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 73.0° at 0 nm and 191 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 08, which has a length of 1,216 m.
The threshold height at 135 ft agl was significantly higher than the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been too high during the approach. This could be attributed to a number of factors, including the pilot's experience and the aircraft's performance characteristics. The threshold speed was also above the target at 67 kn, which may have contributed to the high touchdown height.
The touchdown point was 75 m beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. However, the touchdown speed of 48 kn was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -202 fpm was fair. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.8 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight drift during the approach.
The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind speed of 1 kn at 270°. The crosswind component was negligible, and the tailwind component was minimal at 1 kn. These conditions would have made the approach relatively straightforward.
The total landing distance was 690 m, which is 57% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, but it is not excessively so. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of the threshold height and touchdown speed. With some adjustments to the approach and landing technique, the pilot can aim to achieve a higher score in the future.
