Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed and off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,412 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 131 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Vision Jet, then departed from runway 25 at the Maria Reiche Neuman Airport (SPZA) in Nazca, Peru. The takeoff distance was 2,386 feet, which accounted for 74% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 98 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 82°F and winds of 12 knots at 192°. The crosswind was 10 knots, while the headwind was 7 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the Maria Reiche Neuman Airport, where the aircraft ascended from 2,460 feet above sea level to 30,995 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,535 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 83 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 8 miles southwest of Pampachiri, Peru, and lasted for 43 minutes, covering a distance of 181 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent 6 miles south of Ayaviri, Peru, and descended from 31,005 feet above sea level to 13,665 feet above sea level, a decrease of 17,341 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 70 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise resumed 1 mile southwest of Taquile, Peru, and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of 43 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at Copacabana Airport (SLCC) was made from the southwest, heading 56.0° at 0 nautical miles and 72 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 06 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 129 feet and a touchdown speed of 87 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was perfect at -48 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 16 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 58°F and winds of 9 knots at 30°. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was 8 knots. The total landing distance was 3,698 feet, which accounted for 68% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 381 nautical miles, which was covered in 99 minutes, and the aircraft used 657 pounds of fuel.
The Vision Jet has successfully landed at SLCC Copacabana Airport, achieving a score of 96.9%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 56.0° at 0 nm and 72 ft above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 06, which has a length of 5,412 ft.
The threshold height was satisfactory, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 90 kt. However, the touchdown distance was good at 129 ft, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 87 kt was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of -48 fpm was perfect, demonstrating a well-executed landing.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 16 ft from the centreline, which may require some adjustments in the approach and landing technique. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 58°F and a wind speed of 9 kt at 30°. The crosswind was minimal at 4 kt, and the headwind was 8 kt, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance was 3,698 ft, which is 68% of the runway length. This indicates a relatively short landing distance, and the runway rollout alignment was very good, demonstrating a high level of control and precision during the landing. Overall, the Vision Jet's landing at SLCC Copacabana Airport was a success, with a high score and a well-executed approach and landing.
