Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 3,754 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 3,754 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 709 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 28 at the Cheboygan County Airport, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 654 feet, which accounted for 16% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 58 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 74°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 270°. The crosswind was negligible, but there was a headwind of 4 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the Cheboygan County Airport, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 973 feet above sea level to 1,094 feet, an increase of 122 feet, in less than 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile northwest of the Cheboygan County Airport and lasted for 4 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The flight then proceeded to the Mackinac County Airport, where a go-around was performed on runway 25 at an altitude of 37 feet above ground level.
The final approach to runway 25 was made from the northeast, with the aircraft heading 248.0° at an altitude of 164 feet above ground level and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 48 knots and a touchdown distance of 626 feet, which was 38% of the runway length. The touchdown rate was perfect at -4 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as during the takeoff, with a temperature of 74°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 269°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,420 feet, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, a process that took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 22 nautical miles and took 29 minutes to complete, using 14 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft, identified as Sirius, has successfully completed a landing at runway 25 of the 83D Mackinac Co airport. The final approach was initiated from the north-east, with a heading of 248.0° at an altitude of 164 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. This indicates a precise and controlled approach, with the aircraft maintaining a steady course and altitude.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 56 knots, which is considered a good threshold speed. This suggests that the pilot had effectively managed the aircraft's descent and speed to ensure a smooth touchdown. The touchdown distance of 626 feet was also within acceptable limits, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process.
The touchdown speed of 48 knots was also good, and the touchdown rate of -4 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect. This indicates that the aircraft had touched down with minimal impact, resulting in a smooth and controlled rollout. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained a consistent and accurate course throughout the approach and landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 74°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 269°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 4 knots, which the pilot effectively managed to ensure a safe and controlled landing. The total landing distance of 1,420 feet was 38% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process and had effectively managed the aircraft's speed and distance.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process and had effectively managed the aircraft's speed and distance. Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft touching down safely and smoothly on the runway.
