Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 4,510 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 4,510 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 514 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna 208B, then departed from runway 18 at MMPE Aeródromo de Puerto Peñasco. The takeoff distance was 1,770 feet, which accounted for 22% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 92 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 84 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 13 knots at 149 degrees. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was also 9 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 3 miles south of MMPE Aeródromo de Puerto Peñasco, rising from an altitude of 1,049 feet above sea level to 5,973 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,924 feet, in 13 minutes and covering a distance of 19 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 9 miles north of UDD Ultraligeros Del Desierto Airport. This phase lasted for 48 minutes and covered a distance of 117 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 4 miles east of Calexico, California, and descended from 6,316 feet above sea level to 5,288 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,027 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb phase 2 miles northeast of Calexico, rising from 5,298 feet above sea level to 6,313 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,016 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft entered another level cruise phase 1 mile north of Mexicali, Mexico, which lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb phase 1 mile northeast of Santa Isabel, Mexico, rising from 6,312 feet above sea level to 7,314 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,001 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead KCXL Calexico International Airport, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 1 mile north of 61CL Johnson Brothers Airport, and descended from 7,007 feet above sea level to 1,805 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,202 feet, in 5 minutes and covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08 at KCXL Calexico International Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 92.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,779 feet above ground level. However, a go-around was initiated at 669 feet above ground level. The aircraft then landed on runway 08, with a touchdown distance of 501 feet and a touchdown speed of 56 knots. The touchdown rate was smooth at -112 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 96 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 2 knots at 94 degrees. The crosswind component was 0 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 2,388 feet, which accounted for 53% of the runway. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 282 feet from the centerline.
The total flight distance was 170 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 98 minutes. The
The Cessna 208B aircraft successfully landed at KCXL Calexico International Airport, achieving an overall score of 81.9%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 92.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,779 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 08, which has a length of 4,510 feet.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 60 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 501 feet, and the touchdown speed of 56 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate was smooth at -112 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were hot, with a temperature of 96°F, and a light headwind of 2 knots from a direction of 94°. There was no crosswind, which made the landing conditions relatively favorable. The total landing distance was 2,388 feet, which is 53% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled throughout the approach and landing.
However, there was a notable issue with the runway rollout alignment, which was excessively misaligned by 282 feet from the centerline. This suggests that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase of the landing. Despite this, the overall score of 81.9% indicates that the landing was still considered successful, and the pilot demonstrated good control and technique throughout the approach and landing.
