Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,822 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,822 ft of the 8,187 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,663 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 08 at LOWI Innsbruck Airport. The takeoff distance was 3,574 feet, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 68°F and a wind speed of 3 knots at 90°. The crosswind was negligible, while the headwind was 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead Innsbruck, Austria. The climb took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 88 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 2,923 feet above sea level to 36,067 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,144 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started overhead Rottenacker, Germany. This phase lasted for 53 minutes and covered a distance of 328 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead Huchenneville, France. The descent took 16 minutes and covered a distance of 90 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 36,185 feet above sea level to 2,983 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,202 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Horsted Keynes, England. This phase lasted for 9 minutes and covered a distance of 17 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 1 mile northeast of Rudgwick, England. The descent took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 2,946 feet above sea level to 1,471 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,475 feet.
The final approach to runway 08R at EGKK London Gatwick Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 78.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,264 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 08R, which had a length of 8,187 feet. The threshold height was slightly above the target, while the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 139 knots.
The touchdown point was 2,298 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 129 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was good at -183 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 58 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 66°F and a wind speed of 4 knots at 130°. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 6,557 feet, which accounted for 80% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 60 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 537 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 1 hour and 48 minutes. The aircraft used 10,496 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at London Gatwick Airport (EGKK) on runway 08R. The final approach was initiated from the west, with the aircraft heading 78.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,264 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was executed with a slight deviation from the target threshold height, which was 56 feet agl, and a threshold speed of 139 knots, which was also slightly above the target.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 2,298 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 129 knots, which was a little faster than the desired speed. However, the touchdown rate of -183 feet per minute (fpm) was considered good. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 58 feet from the centreline, indicating a deviation from the intended landing path.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 66°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 130°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The total landing distance covered by the aircraft was 6,557 feet, which accounted for approximately 80% of the runway length.
During the rollout phase, the aircraft's alignment with the runway centreline was again found to be misaligned by 60 feet. This deviation from the intended path may have been influenced by the slight misalignment during touchdown and the aircraft's response to the wind conditions. Overall, the landing was executed with some deviations from the target parameters, but the aircraft was able to safely touch down and come to a stop within the designated runway area.
