Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,280 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,280 m of the 3,195 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 991 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 35L at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,127 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 176 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 9 knots at a direction of 65 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile north of KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 128 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,567 feet above sea level to 33,000 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,434 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles east of Savanna, Oklahoma. This phase lasted for 106 minutes and covered a distance of 804 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 9 miles east of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada. The descent took 21 minutes and covered a distance of 108 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 33,039 feet above sea level to 1,811 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,228 feet.
The final approach to runway 05 at CYYZ Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 46.0 degrees. The aircraft was at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,256 feet above ground level at this point. The landing was made on runway 05, which had a length of 3,195 meters. The threshold height at 55 feet above ground level was slightly above the target, while the threshold speed was well above the target at 150 knots.
The touchdown point was 575 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 139 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -222 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 8 knots at a direction of 90 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,199 meters, which accounted for 69% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.1 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,052 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 169 minutes. The aircraft used 7,345 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at CYYZ Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 46.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,256 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 05, which has a length of 3,195 meters.
Upon landing, the threshold height was slightly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high. However, the threshold speed was well above the target at 150 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been applying excessive braking or reverse thrust. The touchdown point was 575 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing spot. The touchdown speed of 139 knots was also a little fast, and the touchdown rate of -222 feet per minute was only fair.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.2 meters from the centerline, which could have been due to a combination of factors including wind, pilot error, or aircraft performance. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 2°C and a wind speed of 8 knots at 90°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was also 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,199 meters, which is 69% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, indicating that the aircraft may have been experiencing some difficulties with braking or reverse thrust. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 10.1 meters from the centerline, which could have been due to the same factors that contributed to the initial touchdown position misalignment.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement. The pilot may have benefited from a more precise approach and touchdown, as well as a more effective use of braking and reverse thrust to reduce the landing distance and improve the runway rollout alignment.
