Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,077 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 672 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a TBM 930, then departed from runway 18 at Colonel James Jabara Airport (KAAO) in Wichita, Kansas. The takeoff distance was 1,286 feet, which accounted for 21% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 101 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 96°F temperature and a wind of 29 knots at 190 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 28 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the airport, where the aircraft climbed from 2,435 feet above sea level (asl) to 10,934 ft asl, an increase of 8,498 feet in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 20 nautical miles.
Throughout the flight, the aircraft underwent several enroute climbs and descents, with notable climbs from 2 miles east of Peabody, 6 miles north of Whitewater, and 3 miles south east of M66 Schroeder Field Hillsboro. The aircraft also experienced level cruises, with the longest lasting 13 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles. The final descent started 3 miles north east of KS10 Lake Chelan Airport Chelan, where the aircraft descended from 3,719 ft asl to 2,462 ft asl, a decrease of 1,257 feet in 3 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 18 at KAAO Colonel James Jabara Airport was made from the north, heading 187.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,039 feet above ground level (agl). The landing on runway 18 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 669 feet and a touchdown speed of 68 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -295 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 19 feet from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 93°F temperature and a wind of 28 knots at 199 degrees, with a crosswind of 6 knots and a headwind of 27 knots. The total landing distance was 859 feet, which accounted for 14% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 95 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 56 minutes. The aircraft used 289 pounds of fuel throughout the flight.
The TBM 930 aircraft successfully landed at Colonel James Jabara Airport (KAAO) with a score of 93.2%. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 187.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,039 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft was on a clear path to land on runway 18, which has a length of 6,077 feet.
Upon touchdown, the threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was too high at 81 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been a bit aggressive in their approach. The touchdown distance was good at 669 feet, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
Despite the good touchdown distance, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 68 knots. This may have contributed to a fair touchdown rate of -295 feet per minute (fpm), which is slightly higher than ideal. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 19 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were hot, with a temperature of 93°F, and windy, with a wind speed of 28 knots from 199°. The crosswind component was relatively light at 6 knots, while the headwind component was significant at 27 knots. The total landing distance was 859 feet, which is only 14% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll.
The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll and was able to align the aircraft with the centreline of the runway. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and control of the aircraft. However, there are some areas for improvement, such as reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed to achieve a more ideal touchdown rate.
