Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,527 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,527 m of the 2,561 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 419 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight departed from Munich Airport, a major airfield in Germany. The aircraft taxied from its parking spot to the runway, a process that took 7 minutes to cover a distance of 1 nautical mile. It then began its rollout on runway 26L, starting with a departure roll. The takeoff distance was 1,743 meters, accounting for 44% of the runway's length. During takeoff, the aircraft lifted off at a speed of 164 knots.
The local weather conditions on departure included a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of 3 knots with a direction of 20 degrees. This resulted in a slight tailwind component of 2 kt and a crosswind component of 3 kt. The plane took off on its way to Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, located in France.
Once airborne, the flight leveled off to climb towards its enroute cruise level. The climb started approximately 1 mile northwest of Hallbergmoos, a town in the state of Bavaria, Germany. Over the course of 22 minutes, the plane increased its altitude by 32,070 feet, reaching a maximum height of 34,558 feet. This climb phase covered a distance of 121 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft engaged in enroute cruise flight. The first cruise period began overhead the town of Cles in Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige region. This phase lasted for 22 minutes, covering a distance of 152 nautical miles.
As the plane approached its destination, it began its descent from the cruise altitude. The descent started overhead the Italian town of Cartosio in the Piemonte region. The plane decreased its altitude by 29,050 feet over a period of 23 minutes, covering 78 nautical miles. Following this descent, it entered another level cruise period, this time located 18 miles southeast of the French town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
The last cruise segment lasted merely 3 minutes, covering 11 nautical miles. After the cruise period, the plane started its final descent towards Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport. This descent phase began 12 miles southeast of the airport, at the French town of Antibes. The plane decreased its altitude by 3,754 feet over a 6-minute period, covering 12 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04L at Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport was conducted from the southwest, at a heading of 47.0 degrees. The plane's altitude during the approach was 792 feet above ground level, with 3 nautical miles remaining until touchdown. The landing occurred on a 2,561-meter runway, with a threshold height of 55 feet above ground level, just above the target value.
During the landing phase, the temperature was 19 degrees Celsius, and there was a moderate headwind of 9 kt with a crosswind component of 9 kt. The aircraft's touchdown speed was slightly fast at 135 knots, while its touchdown rate was firm at 320 feet per minute. However, the plane landed firmly on the runway, and once on the ground, it rolled with perfect alignment.
The total landing distance was 1,443 meters, which was 56% of the runway's length. Once stopped, the plane taxied from the runway to its parking spot in just 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
At the conclusion of the flight, the total distance traveled was 382 nautical miles, and it consumed a total of 4,380 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at LFMN Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, boasting an impressive score of 98.8%. The aircraft commenced its final approach to runway 04L from the south-west, following a heading of 47.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and 792 feet above ground level.
Throughout the landing process, the aircraft demonstrated good control and precision. Upon touchdown, the runway length of 2,561 meters presented an adequate distance for the Airbus A321 to come to a stop, with the touchdown distance measuring at 420 meters. However, the touchdown speed of 135 knots was slightly above the target, indicating that the pilots could have employed a more gradual descent to achieve a more optimal landing speed.
Additionally, the aircraft's touchdown rate was firm, resulting in a descent rate of -320 feet per minute. Notably, the runway touchdown position was marginally misaligned from the centreline by 3.4 meters, which is a minor deviation.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 13 knots from a direction of 90 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 9 knots, which had a minimal impact on the aircraft's landing performance.
The total landing distance of 1,443 meters constitutes 56% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft utilized a significant proportion of the available braking distance. Fortunately, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, showcasing the pilots' ability to maintain control of the aircraft even during the critical phase of braking.
Overall, the successful landing of the Airbus A321 at LFMN Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport showcases the pilots' skill and the aircraft's reliability in adhering to stringent landing performance standards, with a slight room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and alignment.
