Departure

Ease the yoke smoothly to hold a steady one g through the ground roll instead of letting it sag to 0.7 g.

What happened: During the ground roll the g force averaged 0.7 g, well below the smooth steady load expected while tracking the runway.

Watch for: Watch the g meter and hold it steady near one g through the roll.

See Departure Roll

Arrival

Apply less back pressure in the flare, easing it in more slowly instead of arresting the sink sharply at 48 ft.

What happened: The flare arrested the sink at 48 ft, ballooning the aircraft before 1,414 fpm of sink rate returned as it settled back toward the runway.

Watch for: Vertical speed indicator: hold a steady, continuous descent through the normal flare band.

See Arrival Landing

Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

42 % The flare strayed well off the target profile. Crossing the threshold 21 kt above target, the flare took all the sink out 48 ft agl above the runway and the aircraft then dropped the rest of the way, 1,414 fpm of sink coming back. Touchdown was 293 m past the threshold. Hold the attitude and let it settle rather than pushing - that excess speed is what turns a normal flare into a balloon, so the fix is on the approach, not in the flare.

Speed and pitch

From brake release to the end of the climb, against time, then the takeoff point by point.

Rotated at 101 kt, on the 103 kt target, and lifted off at 109 kt 0.7 s later, the nose coming up at 3.7° a second.

How to read this

Two traces from brake release: the airspeed on top, and below it the pitch, which is how far the nose is above the horizon. The dashed green line is the speed to rotate at for this aircraft at its weight, and the green dot is where the nose started to come up. The figures at liftoff are the pitch then and how fast the nose came up, in degrees a second.

Rolled from 25 m in, drifted 1.7 m left of the centreline and was back on it to lift off, in 13 kn of crosswind from the right. Airborne 46 % of the way down the runway, before the 75 % line.

How to read this

The roll from above, with your left at the top. The line is where the wheels went, and "widest" is the furthest you drifted off the centreline. Lifting off before the amber 75 % line gets full marks for the roll length. The arrow beside the runway is the crosswind, pointing the way the air was moving, so it pushed the aircraft that way.

The circuit to LFLI 30

Left-hand, 1,000 ft circuit height. The plan shows your circuit over a textbook one for this runway; the profile unrolls the same path from liftoff to the threshold.

Plan landing direction to the left; in pale blue the textbook circuit for your downwind speed, 1.2 nm out at 116 kt

How to read this

The lap from above, with the landing direction to the left: the opposite of the runway drawings. The wide pale-blue line is a textbook circuit for your downwind speed - the downwind a mile out for every 100 kt, every turn at 30° of bank - and your track is drawn over it, each leg in the colour of its mark. The numbers are the four turns, the same as on the profile and the cards below. The 45° line from the threshold is the usual point to turn onto base.

Around the circuit height and bank; the turns are shaded

How to read this

The same lap straightened out, so the height and the bank can be read together. Each shaded stretch is a turn, numbered as on the plan. The green box is circuit height, 1,000 ft, on the downwind. The amber line is 30° of bank, and a turn's steepest bank shows red above 32°. "Turn crosswind from" is the lowest height to start the first turn at.

Steep: 39° of bank.

Bank angle in the pattern is conventionally kept to 20 to 30 degrees, and the base-to-final turn is where that convention earns its keep. Stall speed rises with bank because the wing must produce more lift in a turn. Roughly 7 per cent higher at 30 degrees, about 19 per cent at 45, and around 40 per cent at 60. At 65 kt on base you don't have much margin to spend steepening a turn to salvage an overshoot.

The approach to LFLI 30

The final from 4 nm.

Profile height against the 3° glideslope, with its 2° band in green.

Inside the glideslope band from 1.6 nm, where the final began, to the threshold, never more than 350 ft above the slope.

How to read this

Your height above the runway against the distance still to go. The glideslope is the steady descent path to the aiming point, 305 m past the threshold: 3° here, which is about 320 ft for every nautical mile out, crossing the threshold at about 50 ft. The row under the distances is the height it puts you at. Inside the green band your path is drawn green; outside it, amber.

Looking down from above, flying left to right towards the runway: up the page is left of the centreline, down is right. Sideways distances are stretched so that small drifts show, so a line that looks wild here may be only a few tens of feet. The labels are how far off you were at each distance, amber when outside the band.

Speed against the approach speed. The green band runs from 5 kt slow to 38 kt fast at the 1,000 ft gate, closing to 23 at 500 ft and 10 at the threshold.

Fast from 1.6 nm, where the final began, to the threshold (up to +39 kt).

How to read this

Your indicated airspeed down the final, against the approach speed for this aircraft at its landing weight. The band allows 5 kt slow and more on the fast side further out, closing as you get lower, because the speed is expected to come off on the way down. The figures are knots above (+) or below (−) the approach speed.

The flare41.65

The flare strayed well off the target profile.

The crosswind

8 kt across from the right, which takes about 5° of crab to hold the centreline at 91 kt. Touched down straight - the crab taken out before the wheels touched, wings level.

Wind 007° at 9 kt · 3 kt head · 8 kt across

How to read this

The wind is the one recorded at the landing, split along the runway (headwind or tailwind) and across it. To hold the centreline in a crosswind the nose points a little into wind - the crab - and is straightened with rudder just before the wheels touch, often with the into-wind wing lowered to stop the drift. These are the nose against the direction you were actually moving, and the wings, at the moment of touchdown. Shown for reading; not marked.

Side view — the last 1,093 m of the approach.

Began the flare at 44 ft, 354 m before the threshold; crossed the threshold at 7 ft, 43 ft below the 50 ft target; ballooned 7 ft from 42 ft. Touched down 293 m in, close to the ideal 305 m.

How to read this

The last stretch of the approach and the touchdown, from the side. The height is stretched so that the last few feet show: 80 ft top to bottom, against 1,093 m across. The dashed line is the ideal, 50 ft over the threshold and down 305 m in. The flare ring is where you began raising the nose, and "descent slowed" is where the sink came off; the figures beside them are the sink rate, pitch and speed at that point.

Sink and pitch — through the flare, lined up with the side view.

The sink went from 710 fpm at the flare to 260 fpm at touchdown. The nose came up 2.3° on the way down.

Lined up with the side view above, so a point on one sits under the same point of the other. On top, how fast you were coming down: 0 is level, and −600 is 600 ft a minute down. Below, the pitch. In a flare the nose comes up and the descent slows towards 0. The figure at the touchdown line is your touchdown rate.

Flight narrative

The Lancair Legacy departed from runway 30 at LFLI Annemasse Airfield. Takeoff used 600 m of runway, 55 % of its length, and rotation occurred at 101 kt. Local weather at departure was 8 °C with wind 15 kt from 007°, giving a 14 kt cross-wind component and a 5 kt head-wind component.

Initial climb to 400 ft agl lasted 4 seconds, averaging 502 fpm and reaching 121 kt at the top of the climb. The aircraft then entered a left-hand circuit for runway 30. The downwind leg was 4 nm long, flown in 103 seconds at 1,010 ft agl, followed by a base leg of 1 nm completed in 43 seconds. The circuit lasted a total of 4 minutes.

On final approach to runway 30, descent began from 883 ft agl and reached 17 ft agl in 52 seconds. Stabilisation checks at 500 ft above the runway showed gear down and landing flap were met, while centreline and speed were not met. The threshold speed was recorded at 97 kt, which was higher than target.

During flare the aircraft ballooned, resulting in a very poor flare. Touchdown occurred 60 m beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 91 kt, which was noted as too fast. The vertical rate at touchdown was -263 fpm, and the touchdown point was 4.6 m off the centreline. One bounce occurred after touchdown. Runway rollout length was 859 m, 79 % of the 1,093 m runway, and the rollout alignment was 10.4 m off the centreline.

Local weather at landing was 8 °C with wind 13 kt from 005°, giving a 12 kt cross-wind component and a 5 kt head-wind component. After landing, the aircraft taxied to parking in 5 minutes, covering less than 1 nm. The total flight covered 11 nm in 11 minutes and used 5 kg of fuel.
