Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach that landed joined below the 1,000 ft and 500 ft gates, after a go-around. The gate assessed on the earlier approach is not shown - it was not the landing's.
Side view — the last 2,187 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,187 m of the 3,345 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,245 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 21, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 160 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 23°C, with a wind speed of 13 knots blowing from a direction of 179°. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 11 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of the airport and reaching an altitude of 24,139 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 37 nautical miles and took 12 minutes to complete, with the aircraft increasing its altitude by 22,698 feet. The enroute level cruise phase that followed lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 22 nautical miles, starting 2 miles northeast of Kraichtal, Germany.
The aircraft then began another enroute climb phase, this time starting 2 miles south of Wald-Michelbach, Germany, and climbing to an altitude of 34,230 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 59 nautical miles and took 9 minutes to complete, with the aircraft increasing its altitude by 10,130 feet. The enroute level cruise phase that followed lasted for 34 minutes and covered a distance of 229 nautical miles, starting overhead Kirchberg, Germany.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent phase, starting 27 miles northeast of Broadstairs, England, and descending to an altitude of 7,064 feet above sea level. This descent phase covered a distance of 70 nautical miles and took 12 minutes to complete, with the aircraft decreasing its altitude by 27,221 feet. The enroute level cruise phase that followed lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles, starting overhead Abridge, England.
The aircraft then began another enroute descent phase, starting 1 mile northwest of Chadwell Heath, England, and descending to an altitude of 1,418 feet above sea level. This descent phase covered a distance of 18 nautical miles and took 8 minutes to complete, with the aircraft decreasing its altitude by 5,557 feet.
The final approach to runway 27L at London Heathrow Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 271.0° at an altitude of 1,334 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. However, the aircraft was required to perform a go-around at an altitude of 163 feet above ground level, and again at an altitude of 16 feet above ground level. The touchdown point was 254 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 110 knots. The touchdown rate was very hard, at -509 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18°C, with a wind speed of 22 knots blowing from a direction of 170°. This resulted in a crosswind of 21 knots and a tailwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 967 meters, which was 29% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 5 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 455 nautical miles, taking 113 minutes to complete, and the aircraft used 5,678 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at EGLL London Heathrow Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing performance. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 271.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,334 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 27L, which has a length of 3,345 meters.
The initial touchdown was slightly above the target threshold speed, registering 139 knots. However, the touchdown point was 260 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight overextension. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was also a bit faster than desired, and the touchdown rate was hard at -419 feet per minute (fpm). Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.5 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 22 knots from 170°. This resulted in a crosswind of 21 knots and a tailwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 730 meters, accounting for 22% of the runway length. Although the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.7 meters from the centerline, the touchdown point was 254 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 110 knots was good. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -509 fpm.
The second landing attempt showed significant improvement in terms of touchdown speed and alignment. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the total landing distance was 967 meters, accounting for 29% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating a more controlled and precise landing. Despite some deviations from the ideal landing performance, the Airbus A321 aircraft demonstrated its ability to adapt to changing conditions and achieve a safe and successful landing at EGLL London Heathrow Airport.
