Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,491 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 982 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at ESSA Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, taking 11 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 01L, with a takeoff distance of 1,681 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 164 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 10°C temperature and a wind speed of 12 knots at 9°. The crosswind was negligible at 0 knots, while the headwind was 12 knots. The enroute climb began approximately 1 mile north of ESSA Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, where the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,130 feet above sea level to 36,035 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,905 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 136 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 32 miles east of Stocka in Gaevleborg County, Sweden. This phase lasted for 27 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 206 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 15 miles southeast of ESNX Arvidsjaur Airport in Norrbotten County, Sweden, where the aircraft descended from 36,235 feet above sea level to 2,963 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,272 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 145 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03 at ESNQ Kiruna Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 33.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,475 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 03, which had a length of 2,491 meters. The threshold height was excessively above the target, but the threshold speed was satisfactory at 144 knots. The touchdown point was 536 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 141 knots, which was slightly faster than desired. The touchdown rate was firm at -349 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 11.3 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 21.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 5°C temperature and a wind speed of 10 knots at 50°, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 10 knots. The total landing distance was 1,407 meters, accounting for 57% of the runway.
The flight concluded with the aircraft taxiing to the parking area from the runway, taking 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 495 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 85 minutes and a fuel consumption of -1,280 kilograms.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at ESNQ Kiruna Airport, but the landing was not without its challenges. The final approach to runway 03 was initiated from the south west, heading 33.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,475 feet above ground level. The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was 536 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 141 knots was a little fast, which may have contributed to the firm touchdown rate of -349 feet per minute. The threshold height at 116 feet above ground level was excessively over target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been higher than intended when it reached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed of 144 knots was good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and was on track to make a safe landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 5°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 50°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots, which may have helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing. Despite these favorable weather conditions, the pilot still struggled to maintain alignment with the runway centerline, with the runway touchdown position being misaligned by 11.3 meters and the runway rollout alignment being misaligned by 21.0 meters.
The total landing distance of 1,407 meters was 57% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the pilot was able to bring the aircraft safely to the ground, and the aircraft's systems performed as expected. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of maintaining alignment with the runway centerline and achieving a more optimal touchdown speed.
