Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,205 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,205 ft of the 7,988 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,464 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at San Francisco International Airport (KSFO). This process took approximately 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 01L, and the aircraft lifted off after covering 3,657 feet, which is 50% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 148 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 0 degrees. There was no crosswind or headwind to contend with. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the KSFO airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 981 feet above sea level to 37,968 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,987 feet, in just 20 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 135 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles south of Rancho Tehama Reserve in California. This phase lasted for 28 minutes and covered a distance of 238 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 3 miles southeast of Lowell in Oregon. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 37,301 feet above sea level to 1,983 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,319 feet, in 36 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 107 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 5 miles south of Scappoose in Oregon. This phase lasted for just 4 minutes and covered a distance of 9 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 10L at Portland International Airport (KPDX) was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 119.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,298 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 10L was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 131 knots and a touchdown rate of -186 feet per minute. The touchdown distance was 1,460 feet, which is well within the acceptable limits. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 48°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 0 degrees.
The total landing distance was 4,910 feet, which is 61% of the runway length. The aircraft then began its taxiing process, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 496 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 101 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,463 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at Portland International Airport (KPDX) on runway 10L, achieving a remarkable score of 99.7%. The aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, heading 119.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,298 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot's final approach was executed with precision, ensuring a smooth and controlled descent onto the runway.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft demonstrated excellent performance, with a threshold speed of 137 knots, which is well within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 1,460 feet was also satisfactory, indicating a well-executed landing. The touchdown speed of 131 knots was within the recommended limits, and the touchdown rate of -186 feet per minute (fpm) was also good, suggesting a controlled and stable descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 48°F and no wind. This allowed the pilot to maintain a steady heading and avoid any potential wind-related issues. The crosswind and headwind components were both zero, further contributing to a smooth and stable landing.
The total landing distance of 4,910 feet was 61% of the runway length, which is a reasonable and acceptable distance. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, resulting in a high score of 99.7%.
