Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,998 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,993 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Savannah Hilton Head International Airport (KSAV). This process took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 01, and the aircraft lifted off after a takeoff distance of 4,257 feet, which was 61% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 146 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started at an altitude of 1,014 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 26,005 feet above sea level, an increase of 24,991 feet, in 11 minutes and covering a distance of 63 nautical miles. The climb began 1 mile west of Port Wentworth, Georgia, and continued until it reached the enroute level cruise phase.
During the enroute level cruise, the aircraft flew at a steady altitude for a short period of time. The first level cruise phase started 6 miles northwest of Sardis, Georgia, and lasted 5 minutes, covering a distance of 37 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 26,010 feet above sea level to 8,730 feet above sea level, a decrease of 17,280 feet, in 16 minutes and covering a distance of 68 nautical miles. This descent started 2 miles southeast of Clarks Hill, South Carolina.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Crooked Fence Farm Airport (3SC4) in Woodruff, South Carolina. This phase lasted 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its descent from 8,463 feet above sea level to 3,329 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,134 feet, in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 16 nautical miles. This descent started 1 mile northeast of 3SC4.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Inman Mills, South Carolina. This phase lasted 2 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 22 at Greenville Spartanburg International Airport (KGSP), flying from the northeast at a heading of 212.0 degrees and at an altitude of 1,293 feet above ground level.
The aircraft landed on runway 22 at KGSP, which had a length of 10,998 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 135 knots. The touchdown point was 618 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 127 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -251 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The total landing distance was 3,869 feet, which was 35% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 26 feet from the centerline. The aircraft then taxiied to the parking area from the runway, taking 2 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 196 nautical miles, and the flight took 57 minutes. The aircraft used 5,158 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 aircraft successfully landed at Greenville Spartanburg International Airport (KGSP) with a score of 95.4%. The final approach to runway 22 was initiated from the north-east, heading 212.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,293 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 135 knots. The touchdown point was located 618 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 127 knots was a bit faster than desired, and the touchdown rate of -251 feet per minute was considered fair.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 61°F. The total landing distance of 3,869 feet was 35% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the runway's length of 10,998 feet.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment with the runway centerline was slightly off by 26 feet. This minor deviation may be attributed to the slight deviation in the touchdown point or other factors affecting the aircraft's control during the landing. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft scoring 95.4% and demonstrating a high level of proficiency in executing a safe and controlled landing.
