MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,690 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 799 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a TBM 930, then departed from runway 25 at ENKB Kristiansund Airport, Kvernberget, with a takeoff distance of 517 meters, which accounted for 23% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 90 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 8°C temperature and a 4-knot headwind at 250°. The enroute climb started overhead Rensvik, Norway, where the aircraft climbed from 782 feet above sea level to 27,437 feet above sea level, an increase of 26,655 feet in 19 minutes, covering 43 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 29 miles northwest of Bud, Norway, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 27,953 feet above sea level to 26,951 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,002 feet in 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles. This was followed by another enroute level cruise, which started 40 miles northwest of Steinshamn, Norway, and lasted for 38 minutes, covering 172 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute climb, which started at a latitude of 64.0890402 and a longitude of -0.5741535, where it climbed from 26,927 feet above sea level to 27,912 feet above sea level, an increase of 984 feet in 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles. This was followed by another enroute level cruise, which started at a latitude of 64.131066 and a longitude of -0.8515193, and lasted for 76 minutes, covering 345 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it encountered the local weather conditions of 8°C temperature and a 3-knot tailwind at 30°. The enroute descent started 8 miles southwest of BIBF Borgarfjörður eystri Airport, Iceland, where the aircraft descended from 27,335 feet above sea level to 5,990 feet above sea level, a decrease of 21,345 feet in 14 minutes, covering 59 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise, which started 10 miles southwest of BIGS Grímsstaðir Airport, Iceland, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering 29 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 13 miles southeast of BIAR Akureyri Airport, Iceland, where the aircraft descended from 5,980 feet above sea level to 4,095 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,884 feet in 3 minutes, covering 11 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise, which started 3 miles east of BIAR Akureyri Airport, Iceland, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering 14 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 7 miles southeast of BIHY Hrísey Airport, Iceland, where the aircraft descended from 3,490 feet above sea level to 2,394 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,097 feet in 2 minutes, covering 3 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 19 at BIAR Akureyri Airport started from the north, heading 172.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,478 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 19 was performed with a touchdown speed of 80 knots, which was too fast. The touchdown point was 367 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.
The TBM 930 aircraft successfully landed at BIAR Akureyri Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 172.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,478 feet above ground level. The aircraft touched down on runway 19, which has a length of 2,690 meters.
However, there were several areas of concern during the landing. The threshold height at 74 feet above ground level was significantly higher than the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been too high during the approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was excessively high at 105 knots, which could have put the aircraft at risk of overshooting the runway. The touchdown point was 367 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 80 knots was also too fast.
Despite these issues, the touchdown rate was good at -169 feet per minute, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down quickly and safely after touchdown. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.3 meters from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 8°C and winds of 3 knots at 30°. The crosswind and tailwind components were both 2 knots, which was not significant enough to affect the landing. Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the aircraft was able to touch down safely and the pilot was able to recover from the issues that arose during the approach.
