Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,584 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,584 m of the 2,441 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 539 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A321, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at EDDB Berlin Brandenburg Airport. This process took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 24L, with the aircraft taking off after covering 69% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 2,743 meters, and the liftoff speed was 151 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 6°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 129°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the tailwind component was 2 knots. As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started 2 miles southwest of EDDB Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,137 feet above sea level to 36,010 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,873 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 88 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 2 miles northwest of Gorleben, Germany. This phase of the flight lasted for 53 minutes and covered a distance of 384 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, which began 8 miles east of Oltedal, Norway. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 36,052 feet above sea level to 1,539 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,512 feet, in 22 minutes and covering a distance of 97 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 17 at ENBR Bergen Airport, Flesland, was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 170.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,377 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 2,441 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 143 knots. The touchdown point was 121 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 136 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -372 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.9 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 5°C and a wind speed of 16 knots from a direction of 140°. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots. The total landing distance was 1,502 meters, which was 62% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 577 nautical miles and took 102 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 4,680 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at ENBR Bergen Airport, Flesland, with a score of 95.9%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north, heading 170.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,377 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 17, which has a length of 2,441 meters.
The landing was executed with a slightly above-target threshold speed of 143 knots. The touchdown point was 121 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 136 knots was a little faster than the target speed, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -372 feet per minute (fpm).
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.9 meters from the centerline, which may have contributed to the deviation from the intended touchdown zone. The local weather conditions at the time of landing included a temperature of 5°C, with a wind speed of 16 knots at 140°. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,502 meters, which accounts for 62% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for a safe stop. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the target parameters. The pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft and execute a safe landing despite these deviations is a testament to their skill and experience.
