Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,020 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,020 ft of the 10,619 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,594 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 01 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA). The takeoff distance was 3,799 feet, which accounted for 53% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 38°F and winds of 13 knots at 312°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was 10 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead the Washington Potomac Washington (District of Columbia, United States) area. The climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 105 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,013 feet above sea level to 36,003 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,990 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles east of the Windwood Fly-In Resort Airport Davis (West Virginia, United States). This phase lasted for 49 minutes and covered a distance of 305 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 1 mile north-east of the Homestead Airport Columbia City (Indiana, United States). The descent took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 75 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 36,176 feet above sea level to 10,985 feet above sea level, a decrease of 25,191 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile west of Westville (Indiana, United States). This phase lasted for only 3 minutes and covered a distance of 14 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 6 miles north-west of Chesterton (Indiana, United States). The descent took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 33 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 11,000 feet above sea level to 1,946 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,054 feet.
The final approach to runway 27C at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (KORD) was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 270.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,273 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 27C, which had a length of 10,619 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 143 knots. The touchdown point was 218 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 136 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -373 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19°F and winds of 7 knots at 269°. The crosswind component was 0 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots. The total landing distance was 4,744 feet, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 541 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 111 minutes. The aircraft used 10,043 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport on runway 27C, achieving a high score of 97.3%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,273 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was well-executed, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed that was well above the target at 143 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 218 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly outside the ideal landing spot. However, the touchdown speed of 136 knots was a bit faster than desired, indicating that the pilots may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to achieve a smoother touchdown. The touchdown rate of -373 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting that the aircraft's wheels made contact with the runway with a moderate amount of force.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 19°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from 269°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a headwind of 7 knots, which likely contributed to the firm touchdown rate.
The total landing distance of 4,744 feet was 45% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and brought it to a stop in a stable and aligned manner. Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilots demonstrating good skills and judgment in executing a safe and efficient landing at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
