Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,742 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,347 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Cessna Citation X aircraft, registered as C-FWRX, with winglets. The aircraft began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
Departure from Gillespie Field, located at KSEE, took place on runway 27R. The takeoff distance was 3,513 feet, which accounted for 76% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 146 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 69°F and a wind speed of 0 knots at 0 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it passed over Santee, California, and began its ascent from 979 feet above sea level to 38,074 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,095 feet in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 78 nautical miles. The enroute climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which started 3 miles south of Holtville, California, and lasted for 46 minutes, covering a distance of 425 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb phase, this time from 38,329 feet above sea level to 39,929 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,600 feet in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 14 nautical miles. This was followed by another level cruise phase, which started 8 miles west of Pajarito Mesa, New Mexico, and lasted for 23 minutes, covering a distance of 212 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued its journey with another climb phase, this time from 40,653 feet above sea level to 42,509 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,856 feet in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 14 nautical miles. This was followed by a level cruise phase, which started 17 miles west of Boise City, Oklahoma, and lasted for 162 minutes, covering a distance of 1,431 nautical miles.
As the aircraft began its descent, it started from 42,596 feet above sea level and descended to 1,195 feet above sea level, a decrease of 41,401 feet in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 121 nautical miles. The descent phase was followed by a brief level cruise phase, which started 5 miles north east of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 24 at Nantucket Memorial Airport, located at KACK, was made from the north east, with a heading of 226.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,236 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, which had a length of 5,742 feet. The threshold speed was 127 knots, and the touchdown point was 953 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 112 knots, and the touchdown rate was excellent at -98 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The total landing distance was 4,242 feet, which accounted for 74% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 2,302 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 284 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 9,804 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna Citation X, registration C-FWRX, successfully landed at Nantucket Memorial Airport (KACK) on runway 24. The aircraft approached the runway from the northeast, heading 226.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,236 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the local weather conditions.
The temperature at the time of landing was 74°F, with a wind speed of 16 knots from 237°. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 16 knots, which the pilot effectively managed during the landing. The aircraft's winglets, a distinctive feature of the Cessna Citation X, likely contributed to its stability and maneuverability during the approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 112 knots, which was slightly below the threshold speed of 127 knots. The touchdown point was 953 feet beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slight overrun. However, the touchdown rate of -98 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control.
The total landing distance of 4,242 feet was 74% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and skill, resulting in a high score of 97.0%.
