Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,906 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,906 m of the 3,717 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 978 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Phuket International Airport, taking approximately 3 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 09, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 166 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 26 °C and a wind speed of 0 knots at 0 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started approximately 1 mile east of Phuket International Airport. The climb took place from an altitude of 302 meters above sea level to 10,975 meters above sea level, an increase of 10,673.2 meters, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 101 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 14 miles east of Chaiya and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 101 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 30 miles southeast of Prachuap Airport and took place from an altitude of 11,277 meters above sea level to 539 meters above sea level, a decrease of 10,738.3 meters, in 20 minutes and covering a distance of 125 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01L at Suvarnabhumi Airport took place from the south, with the aircraft heading at 18.0 degrees at an altitude of 520.5 meters above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The first landing attempt resulted in a threshold height that was excessively over target, with a threshold speed that was also excessively high.
However, the second landing attempt was more successful, with a threshold height of 19.9 meters above ground level, which was above target, and a threshold speed of 136 knots, which was good. The touchdown point was 562 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 123 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -0.7 meters per second. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 24 °C and a wind speed of 0 knots at 0 degrees. The total landing distance was 1,825 meters, which was 49% of the runway length. The total flight distance was 342 nautical miles, taking approximately 64 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,741 kilograms of fuel during the flight. The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took approximately 2 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on runway 01L at Suvarnabhumi Airport (VTBS) with a score of 75.9%. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 18.0° at an altitude of 520.5 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The initial landing attempt resulted in an excessively high threshold speed of 249 knots, which is above the target speed. Additionally, the threshold height at 32.3 meters agl was also excessively high, indicating that the aircraft was not properly configured for landing. However, the touchdown point was 562 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 123 knots was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was smooth at -0.7 meters per second, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The second landing attempt showed improvement, with a threshold height of 19.9 meters agl, which is above the target but still acceptable. The threshold speed of 136 knots was within the target range, indicating a more controlled approach. The touchdown point was still 562 meters beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed and rate remained good.
The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and no wind. The crosswind, headwind, and tailwind were all zero knots, which contributed to a smooth landing. The total landing distance was 1,825 meters, which is 49% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing and taxied smoothly after touchdown.
Overall, while the initial landing attempt had some issues, the second attempt showed improvement, and the aircraft landed safely on the runway. However, the score of 75.9% indicates that there is still room for improvement in terms of approach and landing technique.
