Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,701 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 347 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from East Midlands Airport, the Boeing 737-800 began its journey on runway 27, taking 9 minutes to taxi to the runway's threshold and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. At 8°C and with a gentle headwind of 5 knots, the aircraft lifted off the ground after a takeoff distance of 892 meters, which was 35% of the runway's length. The liftoff speed was 153 knots, a suitable figure for the aircraft's performance.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute cruise altitude, it passed overhead Castle Donington, Leicestershire, England, and continued to ascend to 38,989 feet above sea level. The climb phase took 18 minutes and covered 111 nautical miles, a notable increase in altitude. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, lasting 102 minutes and covering 693 nautical miles, before beginning its descent towards Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport. The descent phase started 2 miles north of Leopoldov, Trnava, Slovakia, and took 16 minutes to reduce the aircraft's altitude from 38,832 feet to 3,015 feet. The aircraft then entered a brief level cruise phase, lasting 3 minutes and covering 10 nautical miles, before commencing its final approach to runway 31R.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down on runway 31R at LHBP, with a touchdown distance of 349 meters, which was a good figure considering the aircraft's performance. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 135 knots, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -125 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.1 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking 2 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 922 nautical miles, taking 149 minutes, and the aircraft used 5,312 kilograms of fuel during the journey.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down on runway 31R at LHBP Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport with a smooth touchdown rate of -125 fpm, slightly above the target speed of 127 kt. The aircraft's touchdown speed was a little fast, but the touchdown distance of 349 m was good, considering the available runway length of 3,701 m. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 135 kt.
The aircraft's approach quality was excellent, with a stable and controlled descent from 1,239 ft agl at 4 nm from the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 11 °C and a headwind of 7 kt, contributed to a smooth and stable approach. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.1 m from the centreline, but the rollout alignment was very good, indicating a high level of control and precision during the landing phase.
The total landing distance of 844 m was 23% of the available runway length, which is a good indication of the aircraft's performance and control during the landing phase. Overall, the landing was scored 98.8%, reflecting the high level of proficiency and control demonstrated by the pilots during the approach, touchdown, and rollout phases.
