Keep the approach speed on target
See Arrival Landing
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: off the centreline.
At the 500 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 4,486 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 516 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 16 at UAFG Cholpon-Ata Airport, where the aircraft, a TBM 930, took off with a takeoff distance of 190 meters, which is 11% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 85 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 1°C, with a wind speed of 15 knots at 269 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 15 knots and a tailwind of 5 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Cholpon-Ata, it began its enroute climb 1 mile south of the airport, rising from an altitude of 6,291 feet above sea level to 24,815 feet above sea level, an increase of 18,525 feet in just 10 minutes, covering a distance of 28 nautical miles. The climb was followed by a brief enroute level cruise 10 miles south of Almaty, Kazakhstan, lasting 3 minutes and covering 12 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles north of Almaty, descending from 25,015 feet above sea level to 11,226 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,790 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. Another brief enroute level cruise was initiated 2 miles southwest of UAEN Zakirovskiy Airport Energeticheskiy, lasting 2 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles.
The final descent began 1 mile west of UAPE Almaty North Airport Pervomayskiy, where the aircraft descended from 11,399 feet above sea level to 2,956 feet above sea level, a decrease of 8,443 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 05L at UAAA Almaty International Airport from the southwest, heading 60.0 degrees at 2 nautical miles and 705 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 05L at UAAA Almaty International Airport was notable for having a threshold speed that was excessively high at 126 knots and a touchdown speed that was also excessively fast at 115 knots. The touchdown point was 95 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown rate was firm at -374 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, despite the high touchdown speed.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 3°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 151 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,142 meters, which is 25% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.1 meters from the centerline.
The total flight distance was 61 nautical miles, taking 29 minutes, and the aircraft used 76 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The TBM 930 aircraft successfully landed on runway 05L at UAAA Almaty International Airport, achieving an overall score of 82.8%. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 60.0° at 2 nautical miles and 705 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good threshold height, indicating a well-executed approach.
However, there were some areas for improvement. The threshold speed was excessively high at 126 knots, which may have been due to the aircraft's approach configuration or the pilot's decision-making. Additionally, the touchdown speed of 115 knots was also excessively fast, which could have resulted in a longer landing distance and potentially compromised the safety of the aircraft.
The touchdown point was located 95 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively short distance. The touchdown rate was firm at -374 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 3°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from 151°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was zero. These conditions likely contributed to the aircraft's stable approach and landing.
The total landing distance was 1,142 meters, which is approximately 25% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop quickly after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.1 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the pilot's decision to brake or the aircraft's response to the brakes.
Overall, the TBM 930 aircraft demonstrated good landing performance, but there were some areas for improvement, particularly with regards to threshold speed and touchdown speed. With proper adjustments to the approach configuration and pilot decision-making, the aircraft can achieve even better landing performance.
