Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,629 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,629 m of the 3,672 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 345 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 01 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA). The takeoff distance was 1,347 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 3 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 80 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 0 knots. After departing from KDCA, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the Washington Potomac Washington (District of Columbia, United States) area. The climb took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 101 nautical miles, with the aircraft rising from 1,051 feet above sea level to 35,134 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,083 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile north-east of Dillwyn (Virginia, United States) and lasted for 57 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 428 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 9 miles east of GA20 Stafford Airport Saint Marys (Georgia, United States), where the aircraft descended from 36,098 feet above sea level to 22,567 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,532 feet in 10 minutes, covering a distance of 73 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Palm Coast (Florida, United States) and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 3 miles south of KFIN Flagler Executive Bunnell (Florida, United States), where the aircraft descended from 21,984 feet above sea level to 1,389 feet above sea level, a decrease of 20,594 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 64 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36R at Orlando International Airport (KMCO) was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 359.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,285 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 141 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was hard at -482 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 10 knots at 30 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 8 knots. The total landing distance was 1,550 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft took 6 minutes to taxi to the parking area, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 684 nautical miles, which was covered in 123 minutes. The aircraft used 4,266 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at KMCO Orlando International Airport, achieving a score of 95.7%. The final approach to runway 36R was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 359.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,285 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed on runway 36R, which has a length of 3,672 meters. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed of 146 knots was also within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 345 meters was also good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable approach and touchdown.
However, there were a few areas for improvement. The touchdown speed of 141 knots was slightly faster than the recommended speed, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate of -482 feet per minute (fpm). This is a concern, as a hard touchdown can put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and potentially lead to damage.
Despite the slightly fast touchdown speed, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were also favorable, with a temperature of 14°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 30°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,550 meters was 42% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable approach and touchdown, and that the pilot was able to control the aircraft effectively during the landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were a few areas for improvement. With some adjustments to the approach and touchdown speed, the pilot may be able to achieve an even higher score and a smoother landing.
