Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,544 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,544 m of the 2,617 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 515 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 26L at Munich Airport (EDDM), with a takeoff distance of 1,860 meters, which accounted for 47% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Munich, it began its enroute climb, starting overhead Hallbergmoos in Bavaria, Germany. The climb took 18 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 2,428 feet above sea level to 37,516 feet, an increase of 35,088 feet. This climb covered a distance of 107 nautical miles.
Once the aircraft reached cruising altitude, it entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile south east of Zeil in Bavaria, Germany. This cruise phase lasted for 84 minutes and covered a distance of 535 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting overhead Wigan in the Borough of Wigan, England. The descent took 21 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 37,992 feet to 7,998 feet, a decrease of 29,994 feet. This descent covered a distance of 109 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 14 miles east of Loughshinny in Leinster, Ireland. This cruise phase lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 18 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 18 miles east of Howth in Leinster, Ireland. The descent took 7 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 7,991 feet to 1,464 feet, a decrease of 6,527 feet. This descent covered a distance of 21 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28L at Dublin Airport (EIDW) was made from the east, with a heading of 275.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,234 feet above ground level. The aircraft landed on the runway, with a touchdown point 98 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 127 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was -161 feet per minute, also good.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.9 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,462 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The local temperature at the time of landing was 19 degrees Celsius.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 6 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 798 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 148 minutes. The aircraft used 4,701 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 28L at Dublin Airport (EIDW) with a score of 95.9%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the east, heading 275.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,234 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 131 knots, which is within the acceptable threshold speed range. The touchdown point was 98 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but this is not considered a significant deviation. The touchdown speed of 127 knots was also within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -161 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
However, there were some minor deviations during the landing. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.9 meters from the centerline, which may require some adjustments during the rollout phase. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline, which may require some corrective action to maintain alignment.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C. The total landing distance of 1,462 meters was 56% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with some minor deviations that can be addressed during future landings.
