Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,645 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,645 m of the 3,516 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 581 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at San Diego International Airport (KSAN). This process took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 27, with the aircraft taking off and covering a distance of 1,394 meters, which was 67% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of San Diego, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile west of the airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 314 meters above sea level to 11,579 meters above sea level, an increase of 11,265.8 meters. This climb took 17 minutes and covered a distance of 99 nautical miles. The local weather conditions at the time were a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 19 miles south of Malibu, California. This phase of the flight lasted for 25 minutes and covered a distance of 177 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 11 miles northwest of the Hearst San Simeon Airstrip. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 11,582 meters above sea level to 397 meters above sea level, a decrease of 11,185.4 meters. This descent took 23 minutes and covered a distance of 116 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached San Francisco International Airport (KSFO), it began its final approach to runway 28R from the southeast, heading 298.0 degrees at an altitude of 391.6 meters above ground level and 4 nautical miles from the runway. The local weather conditions at the time were a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.
The aircraft landed on runway 28R, which had a length of 3,516 meters. The touchdown point was 168 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 126 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -1.4 meters per second. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.1 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,568 meters, which was 45% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 399 nautical miles, and the flight took 74 minutes. The aircraft used 2,360 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 28R at San Francisco International Airport (KSFO) with a score of 93.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southeast, heading 298.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 391.6 meters above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down slightly beyond the touchdown zone, 168 meters past the designated area. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -1.4 meters per second was considered fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have maintained a more stable rate of descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 4.1 meters, which may have been due to a minor deviation in the aircraft's approach path. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft maintained its stability and control during the rollout phase.
The total landing distance of 1,568 meters was 45% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 128 knots. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and landing phases.
