Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,580 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 334 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 33R at OBBS Sheik Isa Air Base. The takeoff distance was 1,413 meters, which was 37% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 149 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 77 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile north west of OBBS Sheik Isa Air Base, Sitrah, in the Southern Governorate of Bahrain. The climb took 38 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,171 feet above sea level to 37,843 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,672 feet. The distance covered during this period was 266 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 33 miles north east of OE52 Al Artawiyah South Airport, Al Artawiyah South, in the Riyadh Region of Saudi Arabia. This phase of the flight lasted for 203 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 2,533 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent overhead Newgate Street, Hertfordshire, England. The descent took 10 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 37,883 feet above sea level to 2,015 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,868 feet. The distance covered during this period was 81 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a short enroute level cruise phase, which started 1 mile east of Swadlincote, Derbyshire, England. This phase lasted for 2 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09 at EGNX East Midlands Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 89.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,326 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 332 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 131 knots, but the touchdown rate was excellent at -97 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 90 degrees. The crosswind was negligible, but there was a headwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 764 meters, which was 30% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 2,892 nautical miles, which was covered in 218 minutes. The aircraft used 16,842 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at East Midlands Airport (EGNX) on runway 09, achieving a perfect score of 100.0%. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 89.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,326 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a precise and controlled descent. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 131 knots, which may be attributed to factors such as wind conditions or pilot preference. The touchdown distance of 332 meters was within acceptable limits, demonstrating a well-executed landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was recorded at 122 knots, which was slightly faster than the desired speed. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -97 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled deceleration. The runway touchdown alignment was also very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and a gentle wind of 6 knots from 90°. The crosswind component was negligible, while the headwind component was 5 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly higher threshold speed. The total landing distance of 764 meters was only 30% of the runway length, indicating a short and efficient landing.
During the rollout phase, the aircraft maintained perfect alignment with the runway, demonstrating excellent control and coordination from the pilots. Overall, the landing was a testament to the skills and expertise of the flight crew, as well as the capabilities of the Boeing 737-700 aircraft.
