Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,587 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 316 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 05L at Manchester Airport, with the Airbus A321 taking off after a distance of 1,668 meters, which was 69% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 171 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 110 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile west of Cheadle Hulme, a borough in Stockport, England. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,218 feet above sea level to 33,675 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,457 feet in just 25 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 147 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started overhead Liss, a town in Hampshire, England, and lasted for 89 minutes, covering a distance of 563 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 1 mile northwest of Malla, a location in Catalonia, Spain. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 33,922 feet above sea level to 2,523 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,399 feet in 25 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 139 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started again overhead Costitx, a location in the Balearic Islands, Spain, and lasted for just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24L at Palma de Mallorca Airport was made from the northeast, with the aircraft heading in a direction of 239.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,258 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 24L, which had a length of 2,587 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 229 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 12 knots.
The touchdown was made at a speed of 146 knots, which was faster than the target speed. The touchdown distance was 317 meters, which was good. The touchdown rate was firm at -349 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The total landing distance was 952 meters, which was 37% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway in less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 863 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 148 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,939 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at LEPA Palma de Mallorca Airport, achieving a high score of 98.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 239.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,258 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed smoothly on runway 24L, which has a length of 2,587 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed of 150 kt, indicating a controlled and stable approach. The touchdown distance of 317 meters was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's descent and speed. However, the touchdown speed of 146 kt was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a firmer touchdown rate of -349 feet per minute (fpm).
Despite the slightly fast touchdown speed, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 17°C and a wind speed of 12 kt at 229°, were favorable for the landing. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, while the headwind component was 12 kt, which helped to stabilize the aircraft's approach.
The total landing distance of 952 meters was 37% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, resulting in a high score of 98.3%.
