Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,398 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,398 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 208 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 11 at NTTB Bora Bora Airport. The takeoff distance was 368 meters, which is 25% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 65 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, with no wind at all. The aircraft took off and began its enroute climb, which started 2 miles southeast of NTTB Bora Bora Airport. The climb was from 1,000 feet above sea level to 5,007 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,007 feet in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
After reaching the desired altitude, the aircraft began its enroute descent, which started 7 miles south of BR02. The descent was from 4,860 feet above sea level to 2,212 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,648 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. Following the descent, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 11 miles south of Vaitape and lasted for 6 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07 at NTTR Raiatea Airport was made from the west, heading 85.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,246 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 206 meters, which is well within the runway length. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 60 knots, but the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at the time of departure, with a temperature of 16°C and no wind. The total landing distance was 776 meters, which is 56% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in just 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 33 nautical miles and took 25 minutes to complete, using 11 kilograms of fuel.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at NTTR Raiatea Airport, achieving a high score of 98.2%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 85.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,246 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft then landed on runway 07, which has a length of 1,398 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed, coming in at 66 knots. This may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to maintain a higher speed for the landing.
The touchdown distance was good, measuring 206 meters, which is a reasonable distance for a Cessna C172. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 60 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly higher touchdown rate of -209 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions were favorable for the landing, with a temperature of 16°C and no wind. This made it easier for the pilot to control the aircraft during the approach and landing. The total landing distance was 776 meters, which is 56% of the runway length. This is a relatively short distance, indicating that the pilot was able to control the aircraft effectively during the landing.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout and bring it to a stop safely. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot's skills and experience were evident in the high score achieved.
