Flight Score
Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: six checks at the point nearest 500 ft above the runway after the base turn. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,042 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,042 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 481 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at EDST Hahnweide Airfield took a considerable 343 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Baron 58P, eventually departed from runway 25, utilizing 256 meters, or 42% of the available runway length, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 58 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius, with a gentle wind of 2 knots from 190 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind component.
As the aircraft entered the left-hand traffic pattern from runway 25, it demonstrated impressive agility, completing the maneuver in less than 1 nautical mile in just 62 seconds. Subsequent pattern turns, including a left-hand crosswind turn, showcased the aircraft's responsiveness, with the latter completed in a mere 17 seconds. The final approach to runway 30, which was initiated from the southeast at a heading of 309.0 degrees, featured a good threshold height and a slightly elevated threshold speed of 99 knots. The touchdown point was located 49 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 70 knots and an excellent touchdown rate of -93 feet per minute.
The landing distance of 768 meters, which accounted for 74% of the available runway length, was a respectable figure, considering the aircraft's touchdown point was significantly misaligned by 15.7 meters from the centerline. The runway rollout alignment was also found to be misaligned by 15.9 meters from the centerline. The total flight distance of 10 nautical miles was completed in 12 minutes, with the aircraft consuming 17 kilograms of fuel.
The final approach to runway 30 at EDST Hahnweide Airfield from the south east was executed with good quality, maintaining a heading of 309.0° at 0 nm and -30 ft agl. The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 1,042 m, at a threshold speed of 99 kt, slightly above the target. The touchdown point was 49 m beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 70 kt was within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -93 fpm was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
However, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 15.7 m from the centreline, which was also reflected in the runway rollout alignment, which was off by 15.9 m from the centreline. Despite this, the total landing distance of 768 m was only 74% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 13 °C and a wind of 2 kt at 189°, contributed to a minimal crosswind and tailwind of 1 kt each.
Overall, the landing was scored 90.7%, with the misalignment of the touchdown and rollout positions being the primary factors detracting from the performance. The good threshold height, touchdown speed, and touchdown rate were notable positives, but the significant deviation from the centreline during the rollout phase impacted the overall score.
