Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,708 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 2,708 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 914 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 29 at CYVV Wiarton Airport. The aircraft, a TBM 930, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 89 kn, covering a distance of 1,538 ft, which was 43% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 60 °F and a wind speed of 3 kn from 270 °, resulting in a headwind of 3 kn and a negligible crosswind of 1 kn.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began to ascend from an initial altitude of 1,211 ft above sea level to 1,414 ft, an increase of 204 ft, in less than 1 minute and covering a distance of 1 nm. This enroute climb phase was completed overhead CYVV Wiarton Airport. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nm. This cruise phase began 1 mile north of the airport.
The final approach to runway 28 at CYOK Griffith Island was initiated from the east, with the aircraft heading 271.0 ° at an altitude of 21 ft above ground level and a distance of 0 nm from the runway threshold. The landing was executed with a threshold speed that was well above the target speed, at 74 kn. The touchdown distance was good, covering 909 ft, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 62 kn. The touchdown rate was excellent, at -96 fpm.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 14 ft, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 1,701 ft, which was 63% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59 °F and a wind speed of 3 kn from 251 °, resulting in a headwind of 3 kn and a negligible crosswind of 1 kn.
In conclusion, the flight was completed with a total distance of 12 nm, taking 6 minutes to complete, and utilized 0 lbs of fuel. The flight was executed smoothly, with good performance and handling characteristics demonstrated by the TBM 930 aircraft.
The TBM 930 aircraft successfully landed on runway 28 at CYOK Griffith Island with a score of 99.0%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 271.0° at an altitude of 21 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 2,708 feet.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed, coming in at 74 knots. This may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to flare earlier than expected.
The touchdown distance was good, measuring 909 feet, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 62 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent, with a rate of -96 feet per minute, indicating a smooth and controlled touchdown. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned, being 14 feet off the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from 251°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the smooth and controlled nature of the landing.
The total landing distance was 1,701 feet, which is 63% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled throughout the approach and landing phases. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and coming to a stop in a controlled manner. The high score of 99.0% reflects the pilot's skill and experience in conducting a safe and efficient landing.
