Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,774 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,056 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing San Antonio International Airport (KSAT), the Boeing 737-MAX8 began its journey on runway 31L, taking off with a distance of 5,572 feet, which accounted for 66% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 163 knots, overcoming a headwind of 10 knots and a crosswind of 2 knots. The local temperature was 91 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind direction was from 322 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it began its ascent 1 mile south of Hill Country Village, Texas. The climb phase lasted 16 minutes, during which the aircraft increased its altitude from 1,798 feet above sea level to 36,079 feet, covering a distance of 92 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 7 miles northeast of TT91 Orth Pasture, Texas. This phase lasted 78 minutes and covered 537 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 10 miles northwest of the 93AZ Inde Motorsports Ranch Airport in Willcox, West Virginia. The descent phase lasted 22 minutes, during which the aircraft decreased its altitude from 36,000 feet to 2,471 feet, covering a distance of 118 nautical miles.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 then began its final approach to runway 25L at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX), coming in from the east at a heading of 272.0 degrees. The aircraft touched down on the runway with a distance of 1,057 feet, which was within the acceptable range. The touchdown speed was slightly higher than the recommended speed, but the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles in 9 minutes. The total flight distance was 756 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 9,357 pounds of fuel during the journey, which lasted 130 minutes.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 touched down on runway 25L at KPHX Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with a firm touchdown rate of -364 fpm, slightly above the ideal rate. The aircraft's touchdown speed of 135 kt was a little fast, but still within acceptable limits. The threshold speed of 139 kt was well managed, indicating a good approach configuration. The touchdown distance of 1,057 ft was satisfactory, considering the available runway length of 7,774 ft.
As the aircraft rolled out, it maintained perfect centerline alignment, a testament to the pilot's skill and attention to detail. The runway rollout was smooth and controlled, with the aircraft coming to a stop within a total distance of 3,621 ft, which accounted for 47% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 82 °F and a 4 kt headwind, did not pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The overall performance of the aircraft during the approach and landing phases was impressive, with a final approach quality that met the highest standards. The score of 98.5% reflects the pilot's exceptional skill and adherence to standard operating procedures. The approach was made from the east, heading 272.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,340 ft agl, and the aircraft touched down on the runway with precision and control.
