Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,800 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 278 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Cotswold Airport (EGBP), the Cessna C195 began its takeoff roll on runway 08, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 88 kt in a distance of 974 m, which represented 60% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15 °C and a light wind of 1 kt from 270°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
As the aircraft entered the right-hand traffic pattern, it demonstrated a high degree of maneuverability, completing the pattern entry turn in less than 1 nm in 22 seconds. The subsequent downwind turn, base leg turn, and final turn were executed with precision, with distances of 1 nm, 1 nm, and less than 1 nm, respectively. The aircraft's approach to runway 08 from the west was characterized by a heading of 86.0° at 1 nm and 251 ft above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 52 kt and a smooth touchdown rate of -148 fpm. The touchdown distance of 275 m was within acceptable limits, and the runway touchdown position was only slightly misaligned from the centreline by 6.4 m.
The Cessna C195's performance during the landing phase was impressive, with a total landing distance of 528 m, representing 33% of the available runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating a high degree of control and stability during the landing phase. The total flight distance of 5 nm was completed in 4 minutes, with no fuel being consumed during the flight. Overall, the aircraft's performance during this flight was characterized by precision, control, and efficiency.
The Cessna C195 touched down smoothly on runway 08 at EGBP Cotswold Airport, with a threshold height that met expectations. The aircraft's approach quality was good, with a threshold speed of 69 kt, which was well within the acceptable range. As the aircraft made contact with the runway, the touchdown speed of 52 kt was also satisfactory, and the touchdown rate of -148 fpm was smooth, indicating a well-controlled descent.
The touchdown distance of 275 m was good, and the aircraft remained aligned with the runway centreline for the majority of the rollout. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.4 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or a minor issue with the aircraft's directional control. Despite this, the rollout alignment was very good, with the aircraft tracking closely to the centreline.
Overall, the landing was satisfactory, with a total landing distance of 528 m, which accounted for 33% of the runway length. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a light wind of 1 kt at 270 °, were favourable for the landing. The score of 93.0% reflects a good performance, with only minor issues with the touchdown position alignment.
