Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,138 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 632 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 15 at KBLU Blue Canyon Nyack Airport, where the Beechcraft Duke took off with a takeoff distance of 617 meters, which was 70% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 101 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 10 knots at 160 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 10 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south of KBLU Blue Canyon Nyack Airport, near Emigrant Gap, California. The climb was from an altitude of 5,914 feet above sea level to 11,684 feet above sea level, an increase of 5,770 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting overhead Nevada City, California, and lasting for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 53 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 2 miles northeast of Nord, California, where the aircraft descended from 11,907 feet above sea level to 2,716 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,192 feet in 10 minutes, covering a distance of 33 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 3 miles southeast of CA04 Flying N Ranch Airport, Cottonwood, California, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The final descent started overhead Cottonwood, where the aircraft descended from 2,720 feet above sea level to 1,764 feet above sea level, a decrease of 956 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 34 at KRDD Redding Municipal Airport was from the south, heading 358.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,238 feet above ground level. The landing was smooth, with a touchdown point 198 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 76 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was perfect at -29 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 0 knots at 203 degrees. This resulted in no crosswind or headwind. The total landing distance was 1,019 meters, which was 48% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 115 nautical miles, taking 46 minutes, and the aircraft used 154 kilograms of fuel.
The Beechcraft Duke aircraft successfully landed at KRDD Redding Municipal Airport, achieving a high score of 97.7%. The final approach to runway 34 was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 358.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a threshold speed of 96 kt, which was considered good. The touchdown point was located 198 meters beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slight overrun but still within a safe distance. The touchdown speed of 76 kt was also deemed good, and the touchdown rate of -29 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 0 kt from 203°. This resulted in a crosswind and headwind of 0 kt, making the landing even more challenging and impressive. The runway length of 2,138 meters provided ample space for the aircraft to land and roll out safely.
The total landing distance of 1,019 meters was 48% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing process. Overall, the Beechcraft Duke's landing at KRDD Redding Municipal Airport was a testament to the aircraft's capabilities and the pilot's expertise.
